Stanchions for 1:65 scratch build Lloydsman tug
« on: June 08, 2012, 04:13:59 pm »

Hi! Lotus 1 back on the air, progressing well with my scratch building of a "Lloydsman" deep sea tug to a scale of 1:65, I am now looking at stanchions for the model, having done some reseach into this item I have found out that you can obtain them from "Squires" or from "Display Models" but the cost is quite high for about 200 untis. I know that there are a few of you guys out there that have built the Lloydsman, so I was wondering purchased the item, or made them from a jig, all help would be appreciated.

I did a tug in 1/60, and I scratch built the railings in 1/32(0,79mm) brass rod.

First class work Umi, you can do railings for me anytime. Are you going to show the full build on the forum ?, I hope so. Mick B.

Hi! Umi Nemesis, thanks for your reply and photos concerning making stanchionsfor my "Lloydsman" first of all I was very impressed your soldering, but would be interested to know what the dia: of the stanchions you were using. The size I shall have to use to keep to scale will 1.5mm and only 15mm above the deck, and of the two hole type. I think I would need quite a few heat sinks. Would like to know what you think. Again thank you for your help. Lotus1

Flat bar stanchiions can be scratch built, but it takes a  good vise and easy hand on the drill press.
I think I drilled one exactly where I needed, then used that as  a pattern on the a stack of 10-15 and
drilled additional pieces to match.

Soldering was fairly quick using a 30 watt soldering pen, and any heat sinking was done with pieces of wet paper towel.
Be sure to use a good flux, and heat your solder on the top of the pen, then touch it to the joint. The flux should
melt, and the solder will wick into place.
