used to do a lot of cycling in my youth.  The thought of those hard saddles makes me wince now - I used a Brooks B17

Can still remember the specs of my bike, had it built up using a Rotrax frame

Me too, had a cut-away saddle. Very racey !  Did time trials and was in at the start of massed-start racing (BLRC) , no more black racing kit. Toured/training all over. Got on a train to London and cycled back home to Ayr , 400 miles in a ten days. Not bad for a 16 year old. Oh those quiet country roads. Inherited a "curly" Hetchins" later had a tailor-made "straight" one to fit me. Now reduced to a kid`s  mountain bike from Tesco and was up to the Green Lochan in yesterdays 22c temps. Any idea why it is called that ?

Minerals in water give the hue.  Did about 10 miles of not too rough paths , walked the steep bits of course, well I am 76 years old !!!  Great coming back downhill , springs and things on these bikes are great.

Was all Black Alpacka no numbers and very early starts when I started time trialing used to have to call out your number as you went passed the time keeper at the finish otherwise you didn't get a time early starts to , those were the happy days

Bob,
You are younger than me, I started cycling at the age of 7-  with the C.T.C. when my Dad came out of the forces, started racing at 16 in club 10" confined events with the Glasgow Road club  as you couldn't get a licance to race until you were 18.
I still cycle today at 73 years of age and competed with the Vets until I was 65 and can still get out twice a week on 40 - 50 mile rides weather permitting.
In all my years of cycling and competing I have never seen riders with black Alpaca jackets so you must be much older than you state.
I well remember the woolen shorts with the Chamois inserts and woolen jerseys than became bog heavy in the rain , not like the modern Lycra, and trying to get the breath to shout your number.
Modern day cyclist don't know that they are living, with changing rooms and in some cases showers, we had to ride down to the events , change under trees and cycle back home after the event with your racing wheels clamped to the front spindle and strapped to the bars, none of this namby pamby car transports.

I hope to get out tomorrow in this great weather.
Here is a pic of my current stead, click on for full size, keep peddling.

George.

                                                               Cheers
