optimistic beginer should i be doing this?
« on: April 21, 2012, 06:54:09 pm »

Well, I have been well and truly bitten by the boat bug again, last time was 20 years ago. The optimistic part of me says I can build three boats at once, so yesterday i spent the whole day working on all three boats at the same time. While the filler was drying on one i was sanding the other the stripped another down to bare bones.
the three projects are:
Build 1 a 1/12 scale pinnace started with just a plank on frame hull of dubious build quality. I started filling and sanding, and now have a set of full size plans thanks to my son who works at a print process  dept. While it was in the loft it gathered a lot of dust, and while i was brushing it out and clearing debris with the airline i had an idea. Why not build the interior as well, i mean below decks, dummy engine and boiler, forecastle, chain locker, lift hooks etc. I found an old can of oil based cream coloured paint an did the whole inside.

Build 2 a 1/24 scale freelance coastguard boat based on a perkasa hull. took out the bulk heads to give as much room for running gear as possible. i had another idea for this one as well  %) i read a thread where a member made three super structures for one hull. so i thought an island class type superstructure, and newer sleeker type of build and finally a visby type stealth super structure, slab sides etc.

build 3 a 1/32 stroke 1/16 caldercraft hull, it is sold in two different scales on the same hull 1/16 as isis (the original as bought 20 years ago) and as cumbrae at 1/32.
i aim to build a free lance tug in the style of tid, sun tugs etc. I was going to use 1/24 but this would only make it 67 ft which is a bit short for this type of tug, 1/32 would make it 89 feet and  1/48 would make it 134 feet. So nearest would be 1/32 but would really like to stay with 1/24 do you think a shortened version would look ok ?

Old frelance fire boat stripped and red oxided.

Am i being too optimistic.
Thinking of putting up builds on all three as you lot seem to like pictures Already have a build on for the Perkasa one.
What do you think? ok2

Very nice Martin something for me to aspire to! Thanks for the pictures they will help a lot  just a couple of questions. What hardware are you using, motor, battery. Esc prop, and where did you get the propshaft, please. I have been out of the hobby for twenty years and although I have read lots lately the electric side of things and the immense choice boggles my brain. Are your crew scratch built I was thinking of having quite a few standing all along the deck like some of the pictures in the book!. I'll keep in touch.

The skills shown via your dolls houses, kitchen, furniture etc. etc. Dave,  shows you are a craftsman without doubt.

Sorted out some plans today,
The plans for the pinnace were sent to me by circlip, my son worked magic and brought these home, almost six metres long

The other two I drew my self from the hulls and will be drawn up with the superstructures i am going to build

This one i could do a bit of help with does any one have a drawing  (general arrangement) of the superstructure so i can roughly gauge the layout of a TID type tug please anything will do.

 and finally the perkasa conversion.

A trip to that there Londonium today for a hospital appointment, accidentally  (not) found myself in the 4D model shop WOW could have spent all day and all my money in there.

Also finally got names for my three builds.

50 ft Pinnace will be "199" im afraid as i intend to go to Portsmouth photograph the real thing then replicate exactly.

The perkasa conversion will be the "Oscar D Webber" as this is intended for my grandson who bears that name. (US coast guard ship called Bernard C Webber currently serving)

And the TID type tug will be the "St David" because thats my name
