Smoke Units
« on: May 07, 2006, 09:35:07 pm »

Hello Everyone. Just a bit of advice needed please. Are there any good or bad units out there? Are they worth the expense and effort? If so which is the best value for money? Do they 'smoke' good? Or am I just as well setting fire to a few incense/joss sticks and shoving them down a fireproofed funnel. I've seen the new unit on the WWW but it looks a bit like a forced draught boiling kettle and I'm looking for that diesel type blue/black smoke.
Many thanks. The galleyboy

If the new unit you are talking about is the one from JJE elecctronics, it is indeed forced draft ( from a fan) but is certainly not boiling. It is completley cold water vapour.  It works, Jim tells us, by a unit which creates tiny water droplets which are then blown up the funnel or whatever by a small fan.  Good points are that as there is no heat involved, then 1, it is instant (no heating up).  2, it can be piped from the unit to it's exit point ( funnels, exhaust pipes) in palstic tubing as there are no heat concerns, and 3, because it's water mist, you can add food dye directly to the water and get asny colour "steam" that you want.  try adding some rdark blue and look what good diesel smoke you get !

This info about smoke units is very interesting. Can the unit be linked to an ESC? also, I am building a steam tug but it will have electric power, are there any good sound modules for a triple expansion engine that anyone has tried?

Yes the Old Smokey mk2 unit (I fitted one to a tug the other day) has four modes I think ranging from diesle to puffing steam and then there is the display mode (on without ESC control)

On the tug I arranged it to run from a single switch rather than an ESC as there are two ESC's in the tug it would only run if the one connected was used. With a twin motor driven vessel I think it would require two OS units.
These units are just great and come complete with the control board and connecting lead to connect to 1 ESC plus the instructions mention sound modules from the same company.
Get one have fun and see the "smoke" it will make

One of these JJC OS is deffo on my shopping list for the MS Envoy.

However, I thought Id heard say dont add food dye as this can leave a sticky residue. Is this not the case?

Hi, I think you may have heard similar and it is coffee for colour that left a sticky residue
I think it is in the instructions about the coffee

Not had food dye in the system I fitted as it belongs to capt jack and is in his tug.

hi
no food dye & no 6 volts .
don't tilt it if you ever have to take it out, water will spill out through the fan oh & when you think its empty it won't be.
the instructions are very vague they don't tell you much and there is no difference  between the Mk1 & Mk2 smoke units.
cheers

Hi, I see you fitted the OS to your build of the Tito Neri,

I ran out of room in the hull as well as money  :'( but I still may jiggle things around to try and get one in, I did build into the funnels pipe work ready
