Recomendations for motor and ESC - Please! (Newby)
« on: May 06, 2012, 08:39:33 am »

Hi

I have read many forums and web related articles in regards to what motor, esc and battery packs.

What I have managed to find out is that choosing the correct motor is a science and not for the uneducated first time buyer.  I have tried some of my local hobby shops; however they are not really interested in giving advice if they are not convinced that you are going to buy stock from them.

I have received an old bait boat as a gift.  I would like to install a motor, esc and battery pack (large enough for motor, receivers and servos).  I have read that the 550 brushed motors are good for boats, however many posts indicates that I need to go for a brushless system.
All of the different motor turns, voltage changes, kv's, watts etc. makes it impossible for me as a uneducated novice to choose the correct motor.

Please can you review the pics and advise me of a suitable motor, esc and battery pack.  (Brushless or brushed?)  I would like the boat to have some power to be able to play around in the dam when not fishing, however by no means does it need to be a speed racer.  I am sure the hull will not handle high speed in any case.  Just a cruise around the dam.

Any advice will be highly appreciated in order for me to make an educated decision when buying.

Thanks

Carel

How long is the hull from bow to stern? How wide is it at its widest point? What diameter (in mm) is the propeller?

Help please. I have a fairey huntsman 34" and am looking for a motor to run it. I have 12 7Ah batteries to use.
I know it might sound thick but how do i mount the motor in the boat?

I have had the model for about 15 years and i think its time to finish it off.
Any help please.

Mounting the motor depends on what kind of motor you plan on using.

I'm currently building a 34" Huntsman and have gone down the brushless route but I'm using 22V lipo cells so my setup wont help much.

What sort of performance do you want to get out of it?

I am thinking of using a torpedo 850.
Its how i fix the motor into the boat i am having probs with.
Do i fix it to the bulkhead or the hull?
I would like it to plain but not to worried if it not super fast.
