I watched Australia play Japan in a World Cup qualifying match last night and it was an enthralling match - apart from the referee who seemed to have no idea what he was supposed to be doing

At least he was not biased, he was equally hopeless towards both teams

. However, his dismal performance didn't detract from what was a great game of football which finished 1-1, after Australia was awarded an extremely dubious penalty late in the game. Maybe the ref was trying to make up for a glaringly obvious penalty shout by the Aussies earlier on, which he bewilderingly turned down. He also sent off a player from each team, in separate incidents, and all the experts are still trying to work out what they did to deserve their red cards. Even the ref's awful showing did not detract from a wonderful game, played in great spirit by two closely matched teams.
The Aussies have had a hard week, having to play in 42 degree heat in Oman, then 4 days later and after a long flight home, facing up to Asian Champions, Japan.
I love football

Peter.
