Thought I would share with you all how I simulated the planking for my 1/128 Gneisenau build. This technique will work equally well on all sizes and scale of decks.
First cut your planks into suitably sized lengths which makes the job easy for you. Make sure the length you choose is a multiple of the finish plank length plus a bit for errors etc.
Here my plank length is 40mm so I have cut my planks to 410mm lengths which are just about manageable.
Take around 6 planks and lay them on the sticky side of ordinary black insulation tape. Keep them very close together to improve stablility. I use a wallpaper roller to press down the tape to make sure it has stuck. Be aware that when you peel off the tape from the reel it will stretch so lay it on your cutting mat and wait for it to shrink back before sticking it to the planks.
Set a fence in your mitre block at the length you want your deck planks to be. In this instance mine is set to give 40mm planks. This ensures each time you cut your planks have a uniform length.
I cut a stack of five lengths in one go but you can choose as many as makes your job easier.
Once cut you end up with (in my case 40mm ) a load of planks joined together by the backing of insulation tape.
Put a stack of planks together and cover one end in insulation tape and trim back to the stack of planks. Cut the apart with a new thin blade and you get a finished blank with tape on one side and end.
Split the individual planks apart
working from the taped end towards you very carefully to separate them.
Hey presto you end up with a plank and caulk on one side and end.
You could if you so wish do both ends but I have found that unnecessary.
Hope this inspires more of you to plank decks rather than draw them on.
