ABS Hulls...
« on: August 05, 2012, 03:04:55 pm »

Hi... I was considering strengthening the ABS hull for my new boat, to make it more rigid... does anyone advise lining it with tissue and glass fibre resin to thicken the walls... or just ply frames etc as normal.  Just wondered what you guys do, as ABS is obviously not as rigid as glass fibre or plank on frame.
Thanks Lee

I'm getting the distinct feeling, by the lack of response, that this was a stupid question  :}
I have also figured out polyester resin won't stick to ABS... (I shoulda read previous posts first!)
I shall make ply bulk heads and epoxy them in...

If anyone does have some advice though, I would be grateful.
Cheers Lee

Lee,
What hull is it?
It is usual to strengthen by making some internal frames.
They are stuck with Stabilit Express, epoxy resin (after roughing up the contact surface) or superglue (after roughing up the contact surface).

Hi Bob...
Its the Billing 1/20th US coastguard. The hull does seem a bit flimsy at this size... I shall get some of the Stabilit Express stuff and reinforce it with ply as you suggest.
Thanks for replying...

Hello Lee, I'm in the process of building a kit where the hull and all vac formed mouldings (large ones at that) are thin abs with an assortment of ply for formers and strengthening. Here's a pic of what I have / am using and achieving excellent results, cheap as chips compared to stabilit express and no mixing required. The deck came in two parts one 750mm in length! needed gluing each side and Bostik's pvc polyweld gave me time to positon and has made a brilliant bond.
For the ply I've used contact adhesive, Zab a doo (similar usage) and thick cyano. All worked A ok.  I've also used a lot of standard styrene as well as abs off cuts for packing and strengthening in lots of areas and used acetone (such as the bottle of polyweld, there are many others) both this and the bostik or any such pipe welds give a welded joint whereby the materials "melt" into each other as opposed to just sticking together, etremely strong bond.

                  Regards, Tony.

Hi Tony..
Thats really useful, thanks. I have recently used 'Serious Glue' by Evostik... which is very good... it seems to be silicone based and remains flexible when set. I was using it to glue brass and its very hard to break the resulting bond.
