Help with building a model airboat prop guard
« on: June 21, 2012, 03:03:19 pm »

Greetings, I build "static" model boats and am currently scratch building an airboat.  I purchased some hobby aluminum tubes to build to prop guard, then discovered, I can't solder it together, or can I?  HELP please!!!

it's usually outside the model maker's remit to weld Aluminium together.  Maybe you would be better off using brass or copper tube.

Cheers

Hi there, have a look at the link to CuP alloys, it will tell you all you need to know, I have used Alusol with some success  for soldering aluminium tube and sheet, just don't go mad with the heat, I used a mini pencil torch, worked fine for me....

Nick. :-)) :-)) :-))

I'm building a model airboat, my design and layout, problem is with the motor guard.  I'm attempting to build it from 1/16th aluminum tubing for the frame and aluminum wire for the braces. (pic attached)

I've researched and have not gotten a "solid" answer about this.  CAN, you solder aluminum and if so, what tools and solder do you use?

Haven't soldered in years, but willing to do whatever I need to complete this project.

Pic attached of the Motor Guard I'm building.

Thanks for this information, however I am trying not to use an "open flame."

As said in the other thread, its not an easy thing to join aluminium without an open flame and specialist materials.
There's low temp brazing with low temp aluminium rods and there's specialist solder all linked in the other thread.  All will require an open hot flame which you can't do it with a soldering iron  :-))
