round window vents??
« on: July 05, 2012, 08:58:26 pm »

Can anyone tell me where I can buy some round window vents to go on my model Vosper RTTL? I have looked all over the web for these and cannot seem to come up with anything  {:-{ or does anybody happen to know if they have a particular name so I can carry on my search?

Hope someone can help  :((

"Loinerlad".....looking at the pic you posted....are you referring to the 2 circular things on the windscreen? They are called Kent Clearscreens.
Circular vents were not uncommon. I guess you'd have to make them yourself though. They were basically simple. Two slotted discs. The outer disc being fixed and the inner one rotatable. Turn the inner one so all the slots were open and get full ventilation. Close the inner slot disc and zero ventilation.

I did not know the name either but after a long search I did find them in a German model site & today emailed them for prices for shipping. They cost from 60 to 90 euros depending on size.If you need the site PM me.I can't read German but the picture told the story. Mick B.

I have got to agree with Bryan Young on the ease of making them -

"Simple enough to make though. Two plasticard "washers" (generally the units were painted white) glued either side of the window, a small centre hole for the disc "axle, no need to cut the actual disc as the edge rim is hidden by the outer casings. The visible part of the disc between 12 and 15", with the casing part about 2" wide.  And that's it. BY. "

Rings can be cut with hole cutters or spring compass (ie one that screws in and out)

I'm curious to know how many rpm would be a workable speed?

Dave ...the following courtesy of Wikipeipedia thingie. {-)

"Clear View Screens were originally developed in the mid 1930s for automobiles as a better option than standard windshield wipers[1] but were soon found more suitable for small boats and larger ships. On ships, a clear view screen or clearview screen is a glass disk mounted in a window, usually on the bridge, that rotates at high speed (~1500 rpm) to disperse rain, spray, and snow. A clear view screen is typically driven by an electric motor at the center of the disk, and is often heated to prevent condensation or icing. Clear view screens are also used in locomotives and rail transport"

When you think about it...would you not need to maintain a similar speed in the model irrespective of scale?....as we cannot scale the rain or water drops.........Derek O0

Hi All,

I'm old enough to remeber seeing these on many ships but could those mor eknowelegable tell me ..
were they only mounted on flat windscreens?

From what has been said before looks like an easy job for the laser cutter.

Hey Derek  :o ooh that sounds like a finger trimming project.
I was just thinking more of a suitable speed to be 'representative'
60rpm maybe?

When I am asked a question most times I am chuffed, as the person asking the question is assuming that I know something that they don't. I generally try to help.  I sure know a lot more about Kent screens today than I did yesterday though. Mick B. PS = Dave if you need one or two just let me know & the size too, when I order I will get them for you.

Yes.  It would be "The Recumbent Order of the Grumpy Old Git". (ROGOG)

Not quite off topic, but back in the early '60's when I was interested in bikes I recall seeing adverts in the motor cycle press about a rotating visor intended to allow clear vision in rain.  It was basically a Kent Screen, but was self powered, having vanes around its edge to catch the wind and cause rapid rotation.  Can't think why it didn't catch on.
Just reminded myself about the "Wal Phillips fuel injector", another wonder device of that era that came and went.

In this instance there is some excuse because the questioner had tried but failed to find the info required because they did not know the correct terminology. Fair enough - in this case I would help them - but those who have no problem with terminology but simply can't be bothered to do any research are those I would pass by. It might just make them do their own research instead of relying on the goodwill of others.

Incidentally, not all Clear-View Screens were driven by a central motor as Wikipedia would have you believe. I've seen some powered by an electric motor on the rim of the unit with drive transmitted to the spindle by V-belt

As far as I recall all RAF launches which were fitted with Kent Clearviews were belt driven.

Before our beloved council scrapped the lot. Our Pier trains used the spinning glass system driven by belt from a side mounted motor. As previously described. It can get a bit wet a mile out in the Thames. One driver unit is on display in the Lynn Tait gallery Leigh. John.
