Has anybody built this kit? I would be interested in any comments you may have, good or bad.

I have two of these boats. In my opinion the hull could be thicker. Some of the fittings could be better, the port holes are plated plastic with moulding flash for instance. With twin motors they sail well and will turn in their own length. If you wish to buy or make paddle wheels other than the makers. Please look at the excellant Paddleducks website. I feel that it is a reasonable starter kit but a bit pricy so shop around. John.

Hi
I have built one. The hull is made of styrene and somewhat flabby. But then it's a straightforward build and it sails quite good on calm conditions. Some of the plastic fittings should be replaced, above all the turnbuckle are of very poor quality. I would recommend to make the paddle boxes watertight against the decks, otherwise they are fooded within seconds (at least with my model this was the case first).
Still: I enjoyed building this kit and would recommend it!

I know it is a bit late but you just missed a bargin if you wanted steam http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CHEDDAR-STEAM-MODEL-PADDEL-ENGINE-AND-BOILER-FOR-A-1MT-BOAT-/150820885384?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item231da01388 I would have nabbed it but I was in Hozzy when it finished. but they do come up now and then not normally that cheap though but keep an eye out.

That would have been a nice one! Should you plan to install a steam engine I would not go for the Regner horizontal that I used on mine. Next time I would buy the horizontal Anton Quartz by Fabrice Bretagne.

Kasper is correct in his comments. Like him i had to box in my paddle boxes to prevent water going everywhere. john.

Thanks for the info.  I've been contemplating which paddle steamer kit to get (OcCre, MS, Dumas,...) but I think I will go with the Graupner.  I've built a Graupner RC helicopter before and the quality was fairly good.  And it's the only kit, besides the Dumas, which is designed for R/C.  I also don't love the Dumas, it looks somewhat "cheap" and the reviews aren't great about the quality of the wood.

So, my plan for the Graupner is to mount 2 separate single cylinder engines and drive each wheel separately, allowing for better turning.  If it will fit, I also plan to add a 3rd engine to power a generator for lights and the whistle!

Now just need to find the Glasgow in stock for a good price...

You do not have to find a kit or hull which was specifically designed to be a paddler. Many paddlers have been built on hulls which were designed for screw propulsion. Several of the hulls from Kingston Mouldings or Models by Design and kits from other makers can easily be adapted to take paddle wheels. You could still use the Graupner paddlewheels as theyy can be ordered separately and there are plans available to download over on the Paddleducks website. Although it might be a bit more trouble building something this way would give you a more rigid hull and perhaps somethinh a little bigger with more room for the steam plant. I have only seen one steam powered Glasgow but it seemed very crowded in there. Just another thought - Cheers, Ian.
