Anyone know where I might get this wire ?
« on: July 18, 2012, 03:01:45 pm »

Hi.

I'm trying to get some tiny equipment wire as used on the GOW bulbs.

It's between 0.6mm and 0.7mm diameter including the insulation, 1mtr lengths would be good and in 2 different colours.

No luck on the net so far including Ebay.

Plenty of 0.6 wire but the insulation takes it up to 1.2mm.

Also the Kynar type will be no good.

Maplins do equipment wire, to be this diameter you might have to go for single core instead of stranded....

Thanks Russ.

But again their smallest is in fact 0.6mm but with insulation it is 1.2mm.

What about a stripped down scart lead, each shrouded core holds fine multi stranded coloured leads. Its what I use to wire bulbs or led,s.

Thanks once again Russel,l but can't see anything there.

Also, the prices resemble telephone numbers because you have to buy large amounts, I only need 2 or 3 mtrs.

Keep the suggestions comming tho'.

Thanks Regiment.

Sounds quite like the single solid core Kynar type wire which I at first dismissed but that may well be the way to go as 30AWG can handle 3 amps at 12vdc.

As I only need a few milliamps it would certainly do if I can't find multi strand.

Excellent John.

I have an old Scart lead, so I'm off to the shed now to strip it down.

You could use the fine copper wire from an old battery powered clock or watch (if you can see it that is {-)). This wire is covered in lacquer so it will not short out all you have to do is clean the ends to make the connection but not so much as the cleaned sections will come into contact with one another.

You can buy it on spools, I bought mine about thirty years ago and have only used a fraction of it to date, at which rate it will last another 2-300 hundred years I should think.

Hi Liverbudgie.

The modern Kynar covered wire is the the same as that enameled copper that you have but a little easier to use.

Sounds as tho' what you have left on your spool will certainly see you out, ok2

Another option would be to use the strands out of Cat 5e data cable, these are only 0,5mm thick with the insulation, just measured one of the cores...

Russ, you are are a star.

Also, happen to have some CAT5 leads abt. 3mtrs long.

Off back to the shed, Stanley knife in hand.

Will probably end up with more .6mm than R.S.

Simply overwhelming response to my question.

Thanks everyone.

bt telephone wire
0.6mm diameter before you consider the insulation.
Maplin do enamel or similar insulated wire by the bobbin, it can also be found in dead battery eliminator transformers.  Working ones as well, of course, but they won't be working after  you get the wire.
