source of styrene and cellulose thinners on line
« on: December 03, 2011, 01:12:00 am »

Hello folks

I would be grateful if any fellow member can point me in the direction of any on line suppliers of styrene in longer lenghts than the standard 320x220mm sheets , and also where to source cellulose thinners in, ie a litre size tin or larger at a reasonable price as where I live I can only find thinners in very small tins and they are very expensive and do not go very far. Any advice would be most welcome.

Thanks all the best,John.

I have used ema-models.co.uk for both styrene and solvent glue and recently mindsetonline.co.uk for styrene sheet.
for cellulose thinners i use a car paint supplier local to me approx £15.00 for 5 Ltrs not sure if there is one local to you but they trade as Rondor.

MEK  (Methyl Ethylene Ketone) is a better solvent for styrenes. Same stuff that is sold for cleaning plastic plumbing solvent fittings. Yellow pages is good for finding "Raw" materials.

Ebay has plenty of car paint suppliers who sell cellulose thinners. Postage will add to the cost, but if you weight that against the cost of fuel driving to collect, there isn't anything in it really. e.g.

Large plastic sheets-

Hello folks

a few months ago Iasked fellow members the above question I got 5 litres of celllulose thinners for a total of £15.00 if I remember correctly delivered the day after ordering including P&P right to my home, considering I was buying a small can of 50ml locally for £4,00 approx I think this is great value for money, thanks to the answers I got to my question on the forum. More recently on Tuesday this week again in responses I recieved to my question I phoned E.M.A. Model supplies re styrene and also liquid solvent cement (which is EMA plastic weld), which was £6.00 for 500ml which I think is great value for money, I have tested the solvent on some scrap plasticard and it was excellent, I also ordered styrene sheet at very reasonable prices I think, and the whole package arrived on Wednesday I think this is great service and will certainly use them again.

I have no connection or or interst with these supplires in any way, but I thought I would let fellow members know of my experience in case it may be of interst to them.
Thanks again to all members who replied to my original question re suppliers of the above.
All the best, John.
