Its always easier to model things when you understand what they are and how they work. Despite spending hours surfing the net I can't find anything relating to " net pools " . Maggie has two long thin net pools down either side of the aft deck behind the net drums. What are they for? Emptying the nets into? Soaking the nets in? Draining the nets? Most pictures I have found don't seem to suggest many trawlers have them?

Storing nets that are not on the drums RJR , ie spares when the working net is damaged they can shoot the other stored net and carry on trawling while repairing the other
Could also be where they haul the net into when running it through the powerblock rather than taking it onto netdrum
if you look at the stern of some boats with open decks you can still sea ponds for storing nets usually at deck level aft of the net drums oor powerblocks

I will soon be back from Scotland and the build can continue. The wiring has been done it just needs plugging in then I think it will be time to get her in the bath for ballasting. The plan is to run from a 6v 10AmpH battery which will add 1.8kg. I have a second dead battery that refuses to charge ( old age ) which I can use as another 1.8kg at the opposite end , then make up the difference.
Duckie has been experimenting with some vertical blind weights that we salvaged for his Our Lass build, which seem quite promising. They are easy to handle , and easy to store in a compartment in the hull, also easy to adjust to trim.

I'm back in action and work has resumed !

Last night the electrics were added, a straight forward receiver , ESC , Servo setup. Then it was into the bath for ballasting. My plans to use a dead battery as ballast are not going to work, as I cant find space at the back where I can get the weight low enough. So its back to lead from a church roof ! I must clarify I do maintenance on a lot of church buildings as my day job, so I get odds and ends of lead legitimately ! In the next two pics she is sitting too high with the aide of a couple of cans of chopped tomatoes to weigh her down (242g each)

At various points today I have assembled and painted the power block, which is now fitted.

I will have to get my head around the handrails next.

Hand rails nearly all stuck on

I found this the trickiest bit of the build as each of the 3 horizontal rails for every section was a slightly different shape to the one above or below it.

I know some people make them removable to allow for spraying, but in the end I decided that for me it would be easier to had paint them in situ rather than get them to hold a shape then refit them.

Ps does any one know how to make a thread have more than one page, this is getting a bit long to scroll !

In between puppy minding and assisting at a BBQ for 200 hungry teenagers today I managed to get a few coats of white on the handrails. I think they probably need at least one more coat to make the white "solid"

Then they will get a quick satin lacquer spray followed by a dose of rusting.

I thought I might do a bit of weathering on my OL2 this time and there you are changing your mind.

Looks good even on an iPhone in Malta with dodgy wifi

I like weathering on fishing vessels - Malta has lots and all seem to be well rusted

With the matt white applied to the handrails by brush (about 4 coats) then dusted over with clear lacquer to seal and give a uniform finish, it was time for some weathering. The colouring will look better in natural light and it still need some dabs of darker rust in places.

Next up, having looked at some pictures of a power block I realised that as provided the kit is two square, the real thing creates a rubber V for the net to be run through. Here it is as built from the kit

While replacing a toilet ball valve washer for work I realised the washer was the solution,

With a little trimming round the outside and the centre cut out it made a nice rubber chamfer like this.

It should look okay by the time there is some net on it.

Over the past couple of days I have been tinkering with bits and bobs

Lettering on the radar dome.

Additional details on the deck, the new bits are mainly the black ones.

The trawl boards are now chained and attached too
