Model Boats magazine and Marine Modelling International are the two main boat modelling magazines currently available. As to how much you you should spend, that is entirely up to you. A lot depends on where you live, as kits in the UK are generally cheaper than in countries such as Australia where freight costs push the price up. Radio control unit prices have actually come down with the advent of some of the cheaper 2.4Ghz sets, but again it depends on where you are located. If you give your general location it may be possible for members in a similar area to give you a clearer answer.

 Hi Rob.
Would help if we knew what sort of boat rings your bell.  tugs/ fishing/ cargo boat,  cabin cruiser/ speedboat, military types, or something with sails, or are you still looking.?

I have scratch built a number of boats, but have also built 3 kits, a Billing "Nordkap", a Model Slipway "Sentinel", and an Artesania Latina "Amsterdam". The Amsterdam was my first model boat after many years flying R/C aircraft, and I thought it an excellent first choice - for me, anyway. Model Slipway kits are extremely good, as many Mayhem members will tell you, and Billing kits are very good too, but are probably best tackled after gaining some experience. Have a good look through the posts here on the forum, I'm sure you will find lots of info, and keep asking questions, there is always someone ready to offer help. Joining a club is a great idea, as there is nothing better than face to face discussion.

As Frank says, knowing what type of boat you prefer helps others offer suggestions.

 Hi Rob.
Looked at your pic it says to me european style hull and as I can see it has a fishingboat url beside the pic I immediately thought
of the Billings bent. If whats in the picture is what you have to start with then it can be its a lobster/ crabber type boat.
I have upped a pix of the bent for comparison.  A similar function hull is this pic 2 or this pic 3
