Decals from Inkjet Printer
« on: September 06, 2012, 02:52:18 pm »

I have just recently repaired the Hull on a Billings "Banckert", and have started to repaint it, The original Decals  are now a bit worse for wear and could do with replacing.  I wonder if anyone could comment on Decal Paper available from certain sources, and results they have achieved by printing their own.

I only used the clear - worked great on white background.  Not too sure about the "white" stuff for dark backgrounds.  While I have no doubt it would work well, I get the feeling that it could be an awkward job cutting round small irregular images unless the printer did a very good match with the background.  Using the "clear" to produce white lettering on a black background just needed the image to give that, applied to a patch of white, other background colours were problematical.

I picked up 10 sheet for £1 inc p&p on Ebay a little while ago. Not used any yet so cannot comment on the quality, but had to be worth a go at that price!

Ok ill do it assuming that you have the decal on the computer sized and ready to print as everyone has their own favourite image manipulation software

I've used this technique too, with excellent results. The main thing is to give the finished decal at least 3 coats of clear spray acrylic lacquer before attempting to soak it, as ink jet printer ink does not like water. Once coated, however, there's no problem. I always give the decal another coat or two once it's in place on the model.

Peter.

I repainted my Billings Flying Fish a few years ago and couldn't reproduce the decals so I wrote directly to Billings, it took a while but they very kindly sent me a complete new decal sheet and a copy of their catalogue, might be worth a try if all else fails.
