Got a rare boat?
« on: September 12, 2012, 01:46:23 pm »

Just wondering if anybody has any rare kits they have built or not built.

I have this & it is belied to be the last unbuilt one & one of the last existing ones.
The box has been sealed so i cant get a pic of the contents but i know its all balsa wood & there is a big electric motor & the instructions are all done in Inches like 1/16th"

It is belied to be over 50 maybe coming onto 60 years old.

There seems to be only 2 on Google.
1 rebuilt on another forum: http://www.modelboats.co.uk/forums/postings.asp?th=39801&p=1

Copy all the bits and the plan , build that one and keep the original for "collectors", profits go into paint, glue and other extras. :D

I see this one in similar condition went on Ebay for £75 in July and I suspect there are more around ... nice for those who collect old kits though ...  :-)

Thats pretty cool box is in better nick than mine though wont be selling it so could be more in the future.

O0 That sounds like a plan but...  >>:-( never been that good at shaping things with balsa wood. Once i get bored or something i might copy the instructions & convert all the measurements into something i understand. i cant do inches at small scale. i use inches for big things & mm for small things. once that is done i can work out weather i have the skill to do it.

Im almost 18 so i have plenty of time to get better

Could be less in future if a replica kit manufacturer decides to kit it with more modern materials and techniques. {:-{   Metric or Imperial...no problem .

That is possible but then you can just have the joy knowing you have the rare original 50 odd year old one. A plastic one would be really nice though. harder to damage & easier to repair.

Maybe i will be that manufacturer one day  {-)

Would be hard get hold of the plans unless you own a kit i think so probably unlikely for someone like Graupner to mass produce it

Veron plans are quite easy to obtain, Phil Smiths son sells copies. Phil was the original designer of all Veron kits. Strange how some "Collectors" seem to forget that Balsa, like most other woods dry out with age.

As people probably know, I'm very much into 'saving' old boat kits, and publishing plans to make them 'less rare' and I would endorse Arrow5's suggestion of copying the parts, drawing them up and building - if you want a built boat - from them.

If Phil Smith's son is still selling copies of the plan sufficient to build the kit, then I would not make the copy available. But quite often the old boat kits (unlike the aircraft ones) depended on some spindle-moulded balsa parts which were not defined on the plan. Feltra kits, for instance, just had assembly instructions, as, of course, did EeZeBilts... If the kit is like that - one where you really need the actual part shapes in order to make it, then I think there is a case for making the copy available to other modellers.

Luckily, in this case, you can easily ask Phil's son how he would feel about this. I would have thought he would be quite happy if it was a case of saving an old design that would otherwise be lost.

Of course, if the plan to which he holds copyright does provide all the constructional details then you should not make it available....

These people should be able to put you in touch. They're also good people to chat to about old boat kits and plans generally, since they're interested in preserving them as well...

I have a MS Dolphin unbuilt kit still in loft. Dates from 60's or so.
Sorry no photo's avail at this time but there is an old entry on this forum from
March 2011 from a guest poster by the name of Roadrunner who has posted a few good
pictures of this boat.
If too hard to find try Googling  MS Dolphin(model boat)

Wouldn't know if it is that rare though?

No - if you go to their online shop you'll find that they do model railways and model boats...

Anything from that period is going to be rare. And an unbuilt kit is rarer. It will fetch good money on ebay from a collector.

I believe that Phil Smith/Veron plans are still being sold and are under copyright (though I suspect that boat kit plans do not provide complete constructional details) But the MS (Model Shop) range of boats (Dolphin and Northern Star) are not going to be in copyright any longer. If you have an unbuilt kit I would urge you at least to get the plans copied and published on the internet, which will keep the design alive and available to vintage modellers. If items are just sold to collectors, modellers who might just want to reproduce these designs will not be able to afford to do so, and the design is likely to become unavailable for ever when the collector dies...

I would be happy to help with this, these people will probably do so as well http://www.vintagemodelworks.co.uk/?page_id=9 and  http://www.vintagemodelboats.com/index.html are looking at reproducing a wide range of old kits, so they should be interested as well. These guys also have a thread for publishing vintage plans..  http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1265873

Your call, of course...

Hmm.... as I suspected, more a set of assembly pictures than a plan. If I were looking to 'save' that design, I would scan each flat wooden item to pdf, and transfer the main dimensions of the spindle-moulded balsa parts to a cad package. It can be quite a lot of work. I wonder if my reference sites have any better ideas...?
