Shannon Lifeboat
« on: September 21, 2012, 10:16:04 pm »

I have two wonderful experiences this year, and both in the last couple of months. Ist one was a thrilling trip on the Sennen Cove relief Tamar Lifeboat, including a slipway launch, a trip around Lands End, and out to Longships Lighthouse, returning for a slipway recovery.Wow !
And on equal par to that, yesterday on a trip to Poole Lifeboat H.Q.,I was invited aboard the new Shannon Lifeboat, and allowed to roam around at will, and take photos! Then I was actually shown around the new craft, with a full description of the functions.Believe me, she is going to be a fine craft when she goes on service in July next year. She certainly has changed from the FCB2, a completely new hull shape, and many alterations otherwise. I would like to say thanks to Mark and Martin, for allowing me this privilege. Also to the staff of the Education Department, for helping me with my fund raising, especially Karen.

PS I will post a few photos when I return home, but they are mainly detailing photos, ready for when the model kit comes out.!

You guys make me jealous with your ability to get to have such access to the RLNI boats & infrastructure ,when I joined the Forum I knew very very little about lifeboats. Neil (NHP651) first got me interested in lifeboats with his vast knowledge & then Greg 9 also plus Russel (6705) with their builds & the usual wrong or right remarks, (sometimes a little heated). Now as we plan to visit U/k in the not too distant future I don't think we could miss out on a chance to at least spend a day or two having a close look or tour around the lifeboats somewhere. I also have had lots of help & advice from Baloo (sent me photos at no cost) & Rottweiler who sent me photos also & offered to help to get me any pictures I may want in my efforts in building my Tamar. You all are a great bunch of guys & we hope to meet you all in person at some point in time on one side or other of the big pond that divides us . Make no mistake any of you would be more than welcome to have a visit with us(better half Phyllis) in Canada, thank you all for the added interest you have added to my interest in life & boats, also John (oldiron)one of the few Canadians that I know of on this side of the pond. Finally to Martin for the use of his Forum & his constant efforts to improve it, & my friend Dave (Norseman) for his constant encouragement & wit, you guys make this a very special place to be a part of. I'm glad you enjoyed your visit to the "Richard Cox Scott" Falmouth Severn. Most of the guides there are really nice people, and know there stuff, to make it more interesting.I havent seen the Lands End Lifeboat in years, but keep getting asked "why weren't you there on their RNLI Day" and my reply is its not through want of trying! The organiser never gets back to me!

The second Shannon hull has arrived at the Berthon Boat Company and construction is well underway, this boat is intended for the Relief fleet.

Hi Mick, I think when you die (not soon I hope) you will be buried in a box the shape of a lifeboat you have such a passion for them. Just a note Drawings left yesterday should show up in 10/15 days, enjoy. Mick B.

Thanks Mick look forward to getting them.I am in Blackpool at the moment for the model boat show, looks like it is going to be another nice one.Neils 3 lifeboats,I helped him take down to the show today, look better in real life than they do on the Mayhem build. They really are something to see.Hope I am going to be able to use one on the water over the weekend.Neil took me over to Glasson Dock today, to see the old Liverpool over there. She looks in a very sorry state, but appears to be very watertight still..not bad for over 70 years old! I will post a few photos under a different heading later on. I am staying with a pal of Neils,Rod who is Trawlerman on mayhem. What a nice guy he is,as well as Neil and his family is also.I think I am very lucky to come across so many nicer people in this world.
