Boiler feed pump for Cheddar Puffin engine
« on: September 02, 2012, 10:09:51 pm »

Hi all, have been looking for a feed pump for my puffin. It seems as though the one that Cheddar made is as scarce as hen teeth. Have not been able to track down any solid info about a pump that would fit the Puffin. If anybody can help me with a way to make this work, it would be very much appreciated. I am now using a hand pump to fill the boiler, but thought it would be nice to replace water on the go. The boat is in running order but needs a lot of inside work to compleat. I feel now would be a good time to redo the piping etc. before all the fancy work is done. Thank you all for your consideration,     Firsttime

Thank you for your reply Pettyofficer, will contact Jerry and see if he can help. There are some other ways of doing the pump system but have not been able to get enough info to put it into action. There are a lot of Puffins out there, am hoping some one has a good way of doing it. Thanks again for your help,    Firsttime

Hi Tug---Kenny, thank you for your advise! I did not even think of that. I live in the U.S.A. In the state of Montana. Sorry I can not just drive over to your town from here. I would like to be able to talk with you old hands about these steam engines. They are a lot of fun but one does not learn very fast with out help. This is a great web sight for info and have learned a lot from it. Thank you for your suggestion, Firsttime

Well it seems as if finding an original cheddar feed pump is out of the question. Does any body have any other ways to add a feed water pump in the boat? It does not have to work off the engine. All ideas welcome.   Firsttime

Hopefully the link works.

It might be a good idea to speak to ministeam in the US www.ministeam.com as they sell some of the heischler range and might be able to order them in for you

I have one somewhere they where just a simple cylinder and mount ill try and find it and take a picture they where not very good a they robed the engine of to much power as they where of the constant pumping type that had to be set up to a suitable flow. the owner of Cheddar allays use to say that you run out of oil before you run out of water.(John always told it how it was  usually after you had just bought one) better of a servo eclectic or steam driven one.

essex 2, thank you for your info. The steam pump looks very nice. I will check on the space needed to install. Might be a bit large but will see.   firsttime

HS 93, Thanks for your reply also. I would be interested in seeing the pic of the pump. Have not been able to find one. I have read some where, the same concern as yours about power robbing. I will see if I can find any info on the electric pump idea also.    Firsttime

The topic below may be of use to you either as a design for a mechanically driven or electric driven, and controlled, feed pump.

Firsttime,
Here are pics of the Cheddar pump, it's just an oscillating pump of 1/8" bore x 7/16" stroke, this was made before I had my own machinery and all the bits and pieces are soft soldered a process that I no longer use, silver solder every time, pulleys are Mecanno and the belts are "O" rings from plumbing joints.
Small electric 12 V gearbox from an old Micro wave oven.

The other pump is made using a similar G/Box with adjustable stroke to the pump using a Scotch crank, bore of pump is 1/4" x 3/8" to 1//2 stroke. an at about 120 strokes /min.
This pump fed a large boiler and I would recommend a bore of 3/16".
Although this G/Box is no longer available they can be had from MFA-COMO the second pic shows one driving reversing gear on a 10V engine.

Hope this helps.
 George.

Hi Firsttime,

I am sorry to disappoint you but you are very unlikely to find any off the shelf water feed pump to suit your Cheddar Puffin engine. The original Cheddar pump had a very small ram diameter of approx. 2,5 mm (around 1/10 in) and a stroke identical to the engine's, of 11 mm. I have yet to see any commercially available pumps close to these specifications. Most other pumps have much bigger ram diameters and won't fit the engine unless they are geared down.

The smallest pump I have discovered so far is the Regner servo driven pump art.nr. 20225, with 4 mm ram and 10 mm stroke. It could work as a replacement for the Puffin pump if you can make a new mounting for it and perhaps a connecting rod (if the supplied one won't fit), or you can use it driven electrically with the servo it is supplied with. I'd also be interested to know if there are any other very small pumps out there.

More info about the original Cheddar Puffin oscillating pump: I have tested it both with the Puffin engine and with the Pelican (the v-twin variant of the Puffin). Contrary to opinions expressed above, in my experience it worked very well and didn't rob the engine of much power and was able to fill the boiler with water up to 3 bar. Over this pressure it tends to leak water.
I'm including pictures of the original Cheddar pump with my Pelican engine, for your reference. Here you can see the pump behind the rather large water bypass valve:

Hi KON3, thank you for the pics of your pump. At the least , I now now what they look like. I think you are right about using a pump of some kind with a electric motor. I will keep looking for a way to do this. Your plant looks very nice and well put together. Thank you for your reply,     Robert
