One Man's Obsession
« on: October 01, 2012, 01:58:30 am »

Talk about the ultimate example of one man's obsession when it comes to ship modeling.

I can only imagine the look on one's face once opening the door to that shed & turned on the light.  :o

Reminds me of Bill Wilkinson  and  his 29ft model of   JP Morgan's  steam  yacht Corsair 1V  built in his first story bed sit . These guys my be eccentric  modellers but  you have to admire their endeavours .   I remember getting to see Corsair 1V  and  after some time  exploring the model  model I asked Bill where he  managed  to bed down for some sleep as all I could see was a boat , and he  replied anywhere.  That was Bill Willkinson   :-))

Bowwave,  what happened to Bill Wilkinsons models ?   I loved his paddle-tug "Cracker".
A number of the paddle boats  including Cracker  went to his  friend who helped haul Bills models around the UK.  The 29ft Corsair 1V was eventually acquired by a guy in the Bowness   area .As far as  aware this model was to be sailed but nothing  has happened since it was  "shoe horned"  with the aid of a crane  out of his bed  sit. Powered by a Hillman Imp engine and room for two it would  certainly look an  impressive  model on and off the water. BBC North West recorded a short feature on this model back  in the late 80s

  Bill Willkinson's  29ft model   was painted in the same livery as this picture of Corsair 1V on  being launched . The Livery was changed soon after completion.

Hi Duncan , saddly no .  I have asked around  in the area but  the model has, to my knowledge never seen the water , but I really hope I'm wrong on that one.  As you know Bill  liked to build them simple, cardboard hull,  discarded  timber for the uperworks   , in fact  any  cast offs  he could find, yet  the end result  was simply magnificent, wish I could fined my 35mm shots  {:-{

I'll have an ask around, I know a couple of people that would definitely know if that was in or around Bowness.

Shame it wasn't steam powered, but what a boat!
