Breathing life into an old controller aka Pimp my TX
« on: October 01, 2012, 07:10:32 am »

I'm not sure where to put this or if anyone is even interested, but over the weekend I had a bit of fun with my stepdaughters transmitter.

She's into RC cars and boats and has a Robbe Katja and a short course truck.  Both use the same old "hand me down" TX that I think I have owned since the mid 80's.

So while she was away at her dads for the weekend I had a plan.....
I carefully removed all the electrics and cleaned th case.  As I said the unit is years old and looking a little sorry for itself.

Next we masked up the black area as I wanted to keep this as it is

Off to the paints box and a quick experiment with some tamiya polycarbonate spray I had left over from painting her Katja.  Its stuck to the case very well and gave a nice durable finish

Yes its pink! very pink!
Have to say it looks so much better with the new paint job.  I have since sprayed the case with a couple of coatts of automotive clearcoat
Next will be the addition of a little bit 'o' bling (some stick on Gemstones)

If anyone is interested then I'll post up more pics when its complete.

On a side note does anyone know of any company that does a 2Ch 2.4Ghz traditional twin stick TX?

Yes I had seen that one, but having had Acoms 2.4 (Acoms Hyabussa) in the past 2 things put me off

1 the price of the Receivers (and there are no compatible clones)
2 The Acoms 2.4G system is not very good.  There are a lot of stories of binding issues and a high failure rate of receivers (which I can back up with my own experience)

I have to say having used acoms stuff in the past (through the 80s and 90's) I was quite suprised about the issues I had with the 2.4

With the price of the 4 (and more) channel offerings such as this I wouldn't bother looking for just 2. You don't have to use all the channels :}

Interesting!

Can you expand on cleaning the surfaces and what you used to prep them for painting please?

 Martin

after stripping the unit down I rubbed down the areas with chips and scratches with old 1000 grit wet and dry used wet.
Next I cleaned it down in soapy water...  Use the cheap stuff, not the ones endorsed by Nanette Newman et all, rinsed thoroughly in clear water.
A quick rinse in a water/vinegar solution followed by another rinse in clear water.
Pat Dry with a lint free cloth and then leave to dry thoroughly for a few hours at least.
Mask with your chosen tape.
On to the painting.  The paint I used was tamiya polycarbonate spray, I test sprayed the inside of the battery cover to see how well it stck and it stck very well.

"A quick rinse in a water/vinegar solution" - is that a sort of etch primer?

You can get reasonably priced stick radios on 2.4GHz from the likes of Tamco, Code and Etronix.

No not really, it just helps to remove any residual soap and oils.... well this is what I was told and it seems to work
