2.4 in boats...
« on: October 19, 2012, 10:52:02 pm »

Hi all, It's been such a long time since I've been on here, and wow so many new builds and some excellent photos etc!!

 Anyhow...I'm just on with refurbishing my rather old and worn Al Khubar. However, I have 2.4 radio gear in my rc trucks, but what's it like for boats? Range/signal wise etc?

 I'm sure this has been asked before, but any tips are much appreciated.

I'll get some pics up of my boats...and trucks, asap.

Thanks all.  :}

Agree with Bob but beware the cheaper 2.4's have range problems when on the water, always go for a full range set, I've seen some boats lose control at 50 metres, the owners put a better quality set in ....no problems from then on.
They are no good for submarines, stick to 40mhz for those  :-))

I use 2.4GHz gear in my 3 yachts and an electric, not a problem.
Have heard that carbon fibre hulls may cause radio issues.

I am using these:
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__8338__Hobby_King_2_4Ghz_4Ch_Tx_Rx_V2_Mode_2_.html
Four channels, comes complete with a receiver for under US$25 plus freight
They have excellent range (they are actually FlySky electronics inside)
Only downside is no endpoint adjustment on this model
Do not require a computer to program, channel reversiing switches ont he front panel.
Uses 8 x AA batteries - you can them recharge in the unit as it has a charging jack...

I like them....

There is another model that DOES need a computer and cable to program, similar price range - think that may have endpoint adjustment, not sure sorry

Hi all,

 Many thanks for your replies on this subject - I was just a bit concerned, especially the fact that the ariel on the 2.4 receiver's is quite a bit shorter than on a standard 40 or 35 Meg set.

In my trucks, I use gear such as the Planet T5 and the Spektrum Dx5/6/7e set ups - are these to risky for boats I assume?

thanks,

i use my dx8 , my son and his pal both use their dx6i's ( along with a few other members of club ) and no probs with range , our local pond is about 400 odd yards long and standing at 1 end and boat at other theres no loss of signal , just keep your ariel as high above the water line as you can  :-))

I use a Spektrum DX6i in a Marblehead Yacht, a Victoria Yacht, a Tug and a Springer, all with Orange receivers and have not had a radio glitch
in the last 18 months since I bought the Spektrum.
My grandson's Dickie conversion and MFA Piranha run on Radiolink T4U with no problems either.
The range on each is as far as I can see the models so no issues there.
The yacht receivers are velcroed up under the deck and on one tack in windy conditions are under water with no problems.

...Well, Planet T5 fitted to the Tug now, all working well.... the real test though, comes tomorrow if I gey chance to take her on the water.

- She's been water tested today in the bath (much to her amusement! :embarrassed:) and all is well, so fingers crossed she'll be sailing onward!

I have to say, the advice, and the sheer rapid response from you all has been fantastic. Hopefully I'll get to meet some of you with my boats in the near future.  :}

.....Suppose i'd better go and dry off  O0 :embarrassed: {-) %)

I use a FlySky CT6B in my baitboat with no external aerial,  and get range further than I can see the boat - at least 400m :)

I'm using a Hobby King HK T6A, similar to the FlySky, and also get an "almost out of sight" range - and no interference problems.
