Fast electric modifications
« on: May 09, 2007, 09:35:12 pm »

Hi. I bought a fast electric catamaran with twin motors and discovered that it operated on 33mhz, which I've been lead to believe is slightly illegal in the UK! So, I've replaced the radio gear and rather than mess about using the motors to steer, I've decided to replace the 'adjustment' rudder with an aluminium unit intended to upgrade boats of around 1 metre, which this boat is. Before I finish it, a question has formed in my mind as to whether you can use only 1 rudder on a boat that has 2 props?
I'm also figuring on moving the battery slightly forward (because that's where the rudder servo is now) to compensate for the additional weight and possible 'drag' of the new, larger rudder, although I'm using a physically smaller battery pack than originally equipped the boat. The original battery pack was duff, so the boat never worked, which is why the bloke sold it! Ash.

Hi Tinman.

Yes you certainly can use 1 rudder with twin props and if I can get to grips with uploading a photo, this will show you the set-up.
Cheers,
ian.

Thanks Ian. Great photo! I've finished the work on my boat but I have to report complete failure. Nothing works! I'm not sure where it's all gone wrong but I was hoping for at least a faint glimmer of life. Where's that hammer?

I know just what you mean. Been there got the tee-shirt etc. Only one thing to do, start over again from the beginning, it's probably something really basic and simple that you have forgotten, it usually is with my boats.
Cheers,
Ian.

Yup! You guessed! Receiver plug in the wrong way round! Still, I've learned about radio wiring now.
