1/12th scale TAMAR Lifeboat
« on: September 11, 2012, 09:05:10 pm »

Hi,
I seem to have lost my contacts for those who contacted me who were building a 1/12th scale Tamar ,so I am posting a further plea for help and advice here please?
I have now acquired a partly built model, from a friend in Somerset who was unable to complete it. The help I am looking for is advise on what electrics to put in her as she has none at all. I need to know what motors, speed controllers, bow thruster, working radar type ,and where to purchase them perhaps?
I have NO experience with brushless motors ,so please inform me whether or not they have to be cooled and how it is done?
I would also like to have the rear Y boat Launching ramp to  work,as the real thing, and the opening cover plates to automatically open, and if not too much to ask,how to do all this, and to get the aerials to fold.I do have photos of the real thing,I have decided to finish her as the Padstow Boat,"Spirit of Padstow",as I have not got a model of any Padstow boat.
Any and all help will be gratefully accepted.
Many Thanks,
Mick F

Mick im doing a slipway Tamar which is also Sprit of Padstow.  I am making the rear ramp open and close. I have got it all cut out and will soon be working on how to make it all work. I have shorted out the radio and relay side of it. I use the same system on my Arun which works fine. I will pop in the work shop and post a pic or two of what im doing.
Cheers for now

thanks for thar! Phil is rebuilding his website at present,so must be missing the parts I want to see! I see on the video he had already got one aerial and the garage door working on its first trial.Certainly looks fast enough,if not slightly over scale speed.I cant even make out what motors Phil has used.I note they are not cooled either!

Phil is one of the best builders I have set eyes on, but I find it such a shame and so frustrating his site is never kept up to date. There's so much good stuff on there, but equally hard to access.

Same with a few others also, exceptional builds but sites never updated.

Appreciate folk are busy but equally a shame.

Phil, I like Dan am waiting to see your next build steps. I am new to building & rely a lot on members like you to show me the way.I am building the MS Tamar right now & have the Speedline 1/12 scale waiting to start when I have the MS boat finished, talk about jumping in at the deep end. Any help you could give me would be much appreciated in relation to the Y boat door opening & the mast retracting. I have good mechanical skills but lack boat building experience. In anticipation thank you for any help you could give me & others. Mick B.

My Speedline Tamar kit arrived on Thursday, so I am busy right now checking that everything has been correctly supplied.

It is a new experience for me to be able to break-out the laser cut perspex parts and they then perfectly test-fit together without any adjustment.

I hope to get the Y-boat to be remotely launched and recovered, so the transom door and everything else on board will be radio controlled.  My Model Slipway 1:16 Tamar is already slipway launched and recovered under radio control and so this larger one will be too.

I hope to base it on the next Tamar that goes into service shortly,"16-25", it is as yet unnamed, but will be stationed at Moelfre on Anglesey, which just happens to be my nearest slipway lifeboat station.

Anyway, that is what I hope to achieve, but I know it can only happen with the help and guidance along the way of the very informative posts on Mayhem.

I have printed off the four supplied plans at full-scale, do I need the RNLI plans too ?

Does anyone have any comments to help me on my way ?

Hi Kenmel, I have purchased the RNLI plans & I would say that they will be a great help in the build. I got fast & courteous service from RNLI & was glad to be able to get such plans without a hassle. It is also a good feeling knowing that by buying from them it helps to keep them in operation. Like you I know that I will be asking for help along the way. A note to Rottweiler, the plans I promised will be on the way to you in a few days. Mick B.

Hi kinmel

I hope you enjoy your build I will posting a couple more of mine after the weekend please note if you get the plans from the rnli they we be of pre facelifted tamar's.
My tamar is a model of 16-12 so she is about 3 years old and she has just been back to Poole for rework works and a small refit the differences are that the later boats have extra bracing on the mast a frame, also the outer starboard wip aerial has been replaced with a shorter stubby ais aerial and there are extra graphics with rnli on either side and at the front of the wheel house.
I hope this helps if you need a hand please email me

Hi Rich

The build is progressing steadily, electrics are installed,  the transom door and the rear deck hatch are now automated and hull painting is underway.

I am building as Tamar 16-25 which will go on Station at Moelfre in March.  I have been sent some photos by the crew and will get more once training starts in the new year.

I have supplied Adrian with the photos and his graphics set has been updated to include those items you mention, the depth markings now include a blue set and a white set because now the markings change colour midway.  Eventually all Tamars will have the white lower hull already featured on the latest boats and you can't have white markings on a white background  :-)

There is a photo of 16-25 "Kiwi" on http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/shipdetails.aspx?MMSI=235069217    Now when an AIS equipped lifeboat is transmitting you can track it in real time.

There are more photos of the latest boat in service on the Porthdinllaen Lifeboat website   http://www.pylifeboat.org/index.php/gallery

I look forward to seeing your build photos.
