I bought a generic set years back and now just buy the sets of 3 for a specific size I want, I have the m14x1 tap and die that matches the spindle thread on my unimat 3.

Thanks for the replies chaps.

It would mainly be used on brass and rare occasions alloy.

The 75 piece set should cover my needs, however I may have to get hold of the odd tap for when using BA screws etc.

don't buy one of those draper sets, Dan.........they are rubish.
the sizes actually don't equate to real sizes........a mate has one and his m4 and my old ones that are more than 50 years old.........are different sizes.anything tapped or threaded with his don't fit metric or ba that I have threaded....they are cheaply churned out chinese mush......
your best bet, (like I did, is to pick up old taps and dies for the sizes you most need and want from such places as antique and car boot stalls...old stuff but good quality.....most modellers only need 4/5 sizes(unless you are going into steam.....and then you definately DON'T WANT poor quality steel) and these are easily found..........but made of far superior stuff to chinese steel.

Second thumbs up for the Tap and Die company. No rubbish there, and they know their stuff. Pretty much every tap and die for every type of thread you can think of.

Hi there, Chronos do a good range of tap and die sets, mostly of Eastern European manufacture, I have had one of their BA sets for years now and have not had a problem with them.

I think one way to go is to get one of the cheapish sets then if they break replace the sizes you use with decent individual sets of 3 taps.

the problem with the cheep sets is not breaking, but stretching when you are starting the cut on bar...it stretches so much that you don't get the size of thread you need..........there's no replacement for good high quality tools....they last a lifetime, instead of having to replace cheep and nasty ones that don't do the job properly.

I read a review about the this draper set where the actual tap bar snapped or something along those lines. Certainly something you don't need mid tap!

the tap and die set you mention is made from carbon steel,I break them real easy, they're ok for cleaning threads up,high speed steel is the only way to go in my opinion.May cost a bit more but will last a lifetime with care, hope this helps

I think I will buy the parts ad-hoc, that way i can get the high quality and not spend over the odds on sizes i would never use.

The best cutting tools for most of the materials commonly used in toy making is Carbon steel, but the quality varies. A good Carbon tap will beat a poor HSS one. Don't forget that Stainless is tough on HSS tools too.

What about Tungsten steel. Taps and dies made correctly from this material will enen handle stainless. John.

Re tungsten,I have a set of tungsten taps and dies also, but I dont recon much to them.theyre new but dont seem very sharp,I worked in Engineering (machining)for a few years but the only taps and dies I saw and used were HSS.There are sets higher i.e titanium etc but costly and I think more than your requirement,Clark or Osbourn just to name two would be a good choice, have a good day,Terry
