fairey huntsman enough power?
« on: December 03, 2012, 03:20:57 pm »

please excuse the obvious questions, but although I have always had a model hull somewhere about the place...I have very little experience !
I always wanted a fairly quick sports boat of the old fashioned style and my wife bought me the huntsman a couple of xmas back , but the MFA electric motor, just does not have any power even flat out it is slow.
The hull and radio gear is fairly nice but at  35" length, what power do I need to give the boat some "lift" ?
I recently bought a hiltenberger HP40 marine glow motor in superb order with r/c carb and wondered if this would be suitable?
Many thanks...bb

there is a couple of Huntsman builds on here, mine included.  Brushless motors are pretty much the order of the day now as many lakes etc do not allow IC engines anymore

mine is here (currently stalled due to ther projects :(

An IC Build here

If you search around you will find lots of info
There is also an excellent build log by RED181 on here, but I cant seem to find it right now.  Lots of in depth testing of motors and the like

If you go the I/C route, you are limiting the options on where to sail. It might be as well to check the availability of a sailing water that accepts I/C before deciding on that solution. as you don't give your location we can't help with that :-)

my "well over the top" build :D

http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=21584.0

my advice, for some extra power at a reasonable budget, Turnigy T600 880kv brushless  motor, direct drive, run on 2 x 2 cell lipos, so 4 cells in total, with a big mah, 5000. X52.5 prop, and use M5 shaft, turnigy 60amp reversing brushless esc should be ok, get higher amp if money allows, then you can upgrade to 6 cells, and watch it fly.

motor £25.00
esc £25.00
batteries £15.00 each
prop £1.50
shaft £5.00 depending on length
decent bearings, get SHG to make the shaft, and ask for a glacier bearing at water end, and ballrace at motor end, and an oiler tube, not grease, it will spin too fast
Find a decent coupling, not one of those red things, it will fall apart

I have used this set up in a heavy  36" Aerokits Fireboat, circa 19mph, 15 mins run time, or longer if you back off the gas!

Brushed set up, Graupner 700 BB Turbo, 12v but run on 19.2v nimhs. Electronise esc, the biggest amp one, X 50 prop, or a Graupner 8.4v bb turbo (bb's have better bearings and higher voltage ranges)

Motor £ google it, not sure, circa £20.00 if you shop around, dont buy second hand, and run it in on 3v for at least an hour, regularly oiling the bearings.
Batteries use component shop, again high mah, 4300 or higher
esc £35.00 (I think!)

Again, a tried set up, circa 16mph, 20 mins runtime, unfortunately speed and run time are not bed fellows!
here is the fireboat on the brushed set up, (still have not sorted the spray rails so it will handle better! :embarrassed: )

The very first Huntsman 31 34" model had exactly that engine and went like greased weasel pooh. Go for it.

many thanks people for your interesting replies, I fully understand your doubts about the use of noisy glow power, bt as the boat will only be used very occasionally and the engineeering side is what interests me, then I reckon IC is OK for me...the last post from dave is the decider, but all your answers have taken me to a new level!....the huntsman build link will be inspirational during my modest refit...thanks all for your time...bb
