An anouncement from the Southern Model Airshow Facebook page

Brian

Southern Model Airshow 2013 – Update

After many months work, the committee of the Croydon Airport Model Flying club (CAMFC) are happy to announce that the New Southern Model Show 2013 will go ahead on the 14th and 15th of September 2013.

Since the loss of the 2012 Airshow, CAMFC have been examining all the options available for the 2013 show and into the future to enable the show to not just continue but to prosper and grow.

The Southern Model Airshow started on a school field running for one afternoon and has grown into the premier show in the South of England. While this has been brilliant for the modelling community (who have stood behind it from the very beginning) and for CAMFC, it has become just too big for a club of 80 members with a committee of 8 to manage. The cancelation of the 2012 show highlighted to us the need to get a more robust management structure behind the show and to secure a proper future for it.

With the above in mind CAMFC are happy to announce that with immediate effect, the show will now be run by Heritage Special Events Ltd (http://www.heritage-events.co.uk/) in conjunction with the WWII Headcorn Aerodrome, Near Maidstone (http://www.headcornaerodrome.co.uk/).

Heritage are a very experienced events management company organising Last year “Folkestone Airshow”, ‘’ Leeds Castle Classical Concert Spectacular” and manage all the flying displays for Chris Evans ‘’Carfest’’. On top of this they already run ‘’Combined Ops’’ a large military vehicle & aircraft show at Headcorn Aerodrome and have on staff several of the old Biggin Hill International Air Fair team + they are all aviation nuts, a perfect fit for the SMS!

As part of the new structure, Headcorn Aerodrome will be turned over to the show exclusively for the weekend & The Headcorn Aviation Museum have already confirmed they will be open to the show visitors.

Not forgetting our non-flying friends, Heritage and Headcorn will also look to have a similar line-up of other interests and traders that made the Southern Model Show such an all-round show.

Further information during the transition, please go to the Heritage Special Events Ltd website http://www.heritage-events.co.uk/ and keep an eye on http://www.southernmodelairshow.com/[/color]

Many thanks for your understanding and support and we are looking forward to the 2013 show already.

Regards

CAMFC Committee

Oh dear! my warning has not been taken serious enough. Now that the event has been confirmed for this particular weekend, many loyal model boaters/clubs that have supported this event in the past, will now have a difficult decision to make. Particularly the clubs from the Essex area that are now 'double booked' with the Essex Country Show at Barleylands Farm on the same weekend!

as you are all aware the southern model airshow had a bit of a problem last year. however it has been relaunched and looks like being bigger and better in a suitable location.
i am having a meeting with the organisers on the 12th of january to determine exactly whats happening and if it looks as good as it sounds i will give out more details after that.

i know a lot of you have already looked at diary dates but if you want to come to this please hang on till then when i can make a definate announcement.

phil knell

by the way has anyone noticed that on the heritage events site they have changed the name to southern model show something we wanted the camfc to do for years but they wouldn't must be a good sign

had a meeting with the organisers of the southern model show last week and they have asked me to run the marine section of the show on behalf of the cygnets model boat club as i did it for 7 years at the hop farm.
hope to get a small informational website up and running in a couple of days but in the meantime if any club wants to attend please contact me at [email protected]
remove the anti spam dash after the @ please.

looks like being a bigger and better show than ever and pretty much the same situation as normal. free camping for exhibitors etc.

look forward to hearing from you all.

Hi Guys,
Just to let you know that the new show organisers at the Headcorn show have screwed the trade by quadrupling the cost of the stand against the Hop Farm show in previous years. In these days of money restraints it is very difficult to understand the thinking of these people. The show at Headcorn is in direct competion on the dates with the Essex show and is by default a 'new' show with an unknown history for the retail side.
With everything that is going on at the moment Hunter Systems as in the words of a dragon are - "I am out"
Sorry! Still, the on-line shop is still open and ready to meet your requirements.

evening graham.

can you remind us what you paid in 2011 at the last show.

compared to most shows i thought £25 pound per meter frontage was quite reasonable.

it does seem a little odd that the organisers are doing such a thing, - i may go as a visitor for the first year and weigh up the new venue / location etc,

then if i like what i see i may consider going in future years for  both days, - just not too sure at them oment, - i do read their official page on facebook from time to time,

lets hope its as good as hop farm was and it puts the event back on the calendar, right now i am not 100% sure, but i hope to be wrong

 {:-{
With my friends we go to English shows once a year depending on the merchants that we will find
We spend about £ 700 each at the shops, adding travel, hotel, food ...............
We pay the entrance to the show, one day, two days ...............
If merchants do not come, visitors will not come.
Visitors buy on the internet and it cost them the freight. Done.

In France Shows disappear for this reason (there are others too)

Hello Phil,
I paid £90 for my six metre frontage stand at the last Southern Model Airshow that I attended in 2011 which in terms of the average show is reasonable (however, last weekend I paid £50 for larger space and the previous weekend only £30 both were good shows in terms of trading) Now that was very cheap!!
The NEW Southern Model Airshow which is being organized by as I understand a commercial enterprise and not I may add by the Croydon Model Flying Club as in previous years wants to charge £340 for the same size pitch. This amounts to £42.50 per metre frontage.
Because of this rise we have made a commercial decision not to attend and it seems that we are not the only traders who have decided that the price hike is excessive!!

Hi Phil
If what Graham says is the case and the traders don't go then you wont have a show.
This would be a real shame.
Also whats the arrangements for displaying from the caravan awning near the pond like we used to do at hop farm?
I heard that the caravans were going to have to be on a separate field.
Is that true ?

Hi Dereck,
What I said was that due to the hike in stand price I have decided not to go and there other traders who are not happy with the price either but whether they attend or not is up to them. At the end of the day it may just be me. It may be that the organisers will relent on all of their strict over the top rules.
Also I have heard that there will be a problem with camping etc.

ok derek and graham. have had a chat with the overall show organisers. graham. not really sure were your figure of £340 comes from. have downloaded a copy of the traders pack which anyone is free to do by the way and it states i quote "all blocks on the site map are sold per metre frontage and are 12m deep the minimum order size is 2m and increments of one metre thereafter. price per metre £25 (0%vat) which includes 4 weekend passes + 2 tent or 1 caravan pass. for a 6 metre frontage i make that £150 which is a good bit cheaper than wings and wheels and weston park last weekend which are comparable shows. colin hitchins the event organiser would be more than happy if you wish to phone him and have a chat. i don't know what the croydon club charged for traders but i know why this price may be a bit more. the hopfarm gave the location without a fee as they took just about all the gate money which was why it was so expensive for punters to get in. headcorn is charging a fair size lump of cash for the use of the venue so the risk is with the organisers but having spoken to them in depth they don't really expect to make much in the way of profit this year. they are charging quite a lot less for visitor tickets in the hope of encouraging more visitors and potential customers/modellers.
derek. yes your right camping is in a different field but it is still free. however the layout of the exhibition area for the boats is entirely up to me and i am more than happy for those that have always done so to exhibit from there caravan awnings by the pool area. perhaps next time you could contact me first. after all the years we have been at the show together im sure you have my details.
this show last year suffered a major kick in the scrotum which resulted in the croydon club loosing a fair chunk of cash so i'm not surprised they decided to pass on the risk. however we are trying hard to carry on as usual this year and too be honest from a flying/car/tank/nearly every other discipline of modelling it is flying along.
we need good boat exhibits and as many traders as possible to hold our end up. all the organisers are determined to make this the best model show in the south and i would rather boats was right at the centre of it after all we all need to attract new blood.
going live this week will be a website which will allow you to book to exhibit, camp and trade from a boat point of view. it will also have information on the marine side of the show.
will post that by friday.

thanks phil

Hi Phil
Thanks for the reply.
However sorry I don't have your details.
I think if there had been a bit more info out there for this show maybe the gossip mill
would not have gone in to melt down.
And believe me there has been a lot of stuff flying around about this show when you talk to people at other shows.

Hi Phil,
Well, I got that well and truly wrong! I appologise to all for that misunderstanding and in light of that will look at the show under a new light in relation to attending, assuming that we the trade will be parking our caravans on the trade line behind our awnings too.
Thank you for making it clear.

now that i have a lot more information myself i am happy if you all want a q & a session on the forum.

as an aside to make things easy am happy to take bookings for exhibitors by pm on this forum if you wish. a website will be up soon but am still working on it. think im a bit too old to be learning web design but getting there.

also more than happy to take individuals if you have interesting stuff to show. will be setting up a spare stand for any spares or you could have a mayhem stand if enough interest
