I was having one of my tri-annual “chuck-outs the other day…actually, it started off with me looking for the spare part numbers for my broken drill/mill, but never mind.
Then I came across an old envelope containing all the instructions necessary to build a clinker built boat. I recall taking this with me to the Falklands in 1982 on the assumption that I would have some “spare time”. Mistake no.1.
This was all mixed up with copies (and originals) of signals I rec’d whilst down there. Stuff I’d totally forgotten about.
Anyway. Part of the screed includes full working plans to cut out of card or whatever. Including the plank shapes and sections. I wasn’t particularly interested in making a 10ft rowing boat, but I was interested in seeing if I could use the techniques shown to buils clinker built lifeboats for whichever model I was building at the time. In fact, it turned out to make a lovely little model.
This was all before the days of home computers of course, so any re-scaling and so on I had to do the “old-fashioned” way on a drawing board. A weeks work then is now about an hour at most.
I know that from my time on this forum that making clinker built boats is a headache for most of us…and this little lot really helps.
I enclose just 4 explanatory drawings….not the proper “working” ones to give a flavour of it. The posted ones have, naturally, been reduced from the original 1mb plus originals.
So I’m busy putting the whole lot on to a CD that I’ll make available to anyone who wants a copy. Sending a CD could be easier than sending by e-mail….especially time-wise, but it could be possible. But if it takes to long to send via e-mail I may have to go down the free CD route. BY.
