Caldercraft Westbourne - build queries
« on: December 13, 2012, 09:53:54 pm »

my first caldercraft kit - stuck early on in build re decking beams.

says to fix at 16mm below bulwarks but the hull side is not flat, so 6mm wood will not sit even for deck to sit in top.

also, did not understand next instructions re deck/superstructure beams, starting with 'mark the outside of the hull'  - why outside? -

hopefully rest of instructions are clearer, but maybe it's me.

any advice or pics of hull/deck install would be good.

thanks
ian

If you kerf the back of the 1/4 Sq strip. it will conform to the shape of the hull a lot easier. To kerf the strip, make saw cuts 2/3rd's of the thickness of the wood every 1/4 inch or so where the bends are most prominent, soaking in boiling water will also help. don't know why instructions say mark the outside, but you could make life easier by making a little gauge. Mark 16mm up from the edge of a bit of scrap ply and square a line across, glue a piece of 1/4 sq along the line and then rest the square bit on the edge of the hull and mark your line around the hull, Personally, I would mark inside and out.
Hope this is of some help,
Regards,
Nick. :-)) :-)) :-))

thanks Nick, but my problem is the curve top to bottom - where the deck support goes is not vertical but at a join angle between the vertical bulwark and curve of the hull side.
only way seems to be to remove wood from the bottom corner that meets the hull all along the length of the side, differing amounts to be removed according to the change in hull/bulwark shape.
