Waterslide transfers
« on: December 23, 2012, 05:47:54 pm »

I'm looking to start lettering on a boat soon and only seem to be able to find self adhesive vinyl stuff from the likes of Barry's or BECC. Don't want rub down type either.

Does anyone know who supplies waterside these days?

Flightline Graphics.

I haven't used his waterslides, but his paint masks are excellent.

Making your own waterslides is quite straightforward if you have a PC and ink jet printer.

Print white (i.e. clear) letters on a black background, paint the area where the letters are to go white, or whatever pale colour you want the letters to be.

White letters on a black background should be easy but experience tells me there are several shades of black. I make all my own graphics on Microsoft paint. Here you can make some squares of colour shades. print them then use the best match. It's not hard but it does take time.

I think the problem with homebrew decals is when you need to make something like American warship pennant numbers in black with a white outline on a grey (gray) hull.
Any ideas?

It took about ten minutes to do the 'A'.

These vinyl letters are probably a similar thickness to decal paper with a couple of coats of varnish.

Well, thanks for all the suggestions but it seems that what I wanted (plain old off the shelf alphabet in waterslide) is simply not available any more. I really don't want to start doing custom stuff just for a few words, never mind the problems with getting an acceptable white.

I understand the s.a. vinyl stuff can be slid around a bit by using soapy water, so maybe it's time to give that a try. Anybody done this? How hard/easy is it?

Yes it works great if you put some washing up liquid and water into a old spray bottle and then mist it on you cam then mover your letters about just like waterslides once there just lightly pat down and leave till fully dry vinyl will be better as the gray will not show,  but if you really want waterslides letters try hannants not sure what size they go up to.
Regards Howard.

Thanks Howard. I'll maybe give the BECC a try as wartsilaone says they are really quite thin.

In fact I may be spoilt for choice as I have also rediscovered (I knew them from my British railway modelling of a decade+ ago) Fox, who still do waterslides.

As well as masses of railway stuff they do some marine including RN style pennant numbers. Look for Maritime Modelling Waterslide Transfers on the left menu on the site above (sorry, can't link direct to the page - the ref is dynamic).
