Tudor Model Shipyard
« on: January 02, 2013, 08:14:57 pm »

Hello everyone,

It isn't often that I communicate on here but I have a question that hopefully someone can answer for me.

My question is this; has anyone heard of, or know of a firm called Tudor Model Shipyard? I have been refurbishing 2 ocean liner models: P&O's Strathallan (picture hopefully attached) and Cunard's Queen Mary that is still ongoing. (IMHO this QM isn't very good). Both models are approx 1:200.

Yes, I have Googled the name but the only reference comes back to me as I asked the same question on a warship forum but sadly to no avail.  Can anyone shed some light please?

Kind regards
Alan

Lovely liner you've got there.  Shame there is such a dearth of them around.

Would it be static or also RC?

Hello Herrmill,

This model is purely static. Last year I was landed with the task of cleaning it up and it has since been on display in Southampton. As far as I can gather there are no other models of Strathallan in existence - well not in UK anyway!
Despite my attempts to find out it's history and that of Tudor Model Shipyard I have drawn a blank. It was previously kept at Dartmouth museum in Devon but even they couldn't tell me anything.  {:-{

Kind regards
Alan

If it was in a Museum, then perhaps Tudor went by the wayside before the days of the internet.

If the name Tudor was on a label, is there a phone, number or town?
The phone number may well be dead, but the old STD or pre STD code may help locate the place of manufacture.
That then may lead to a search of local gazetteer for that town at the library.

Thanks for the reply & wanted to simply say the P&O liners were always a favorite of mine.  Shame she had too short a lifespan after being torpedoed off North Africa during Operation Torch in 1942.

Would love to see photos of Queen Mary when you have a chance.  For those interested in doing a build of the QM, I understand there are 1:200 hulls still available from Franks Mosquito Boat Hobbies out of California.

Hello Frank,

I would be interested to see that one. Do you by any chance have a picture of it?

Kind regards

I may be wrong but I seem to remember a model of the Strathallen on the main deck on HMS Worcester or was it the Glen Strathallen. Either would have been shipyard models and may now be in the Chatham dockyard museum.

Just a thought but Tudor Model Shipyard suggests a Deptford connection to me.
The firm might appear in some old magazine advertisements? Any indication of build year?
