a number of years ago advertised in most of the publications that cover our hobby were adverts for M A P  insurance , does it still exist ? as ive not noticed it in recent times .jon

I'm led to believe that they are long gone.   There are a few others if you want an insurance individually.  My own is with the BMFA.

What do you want to insure? The boats themselves against loss and/or damage, or you against third party claims.
The former can best be done via your household insurance, the latter through a model boat club, the MPBA or BMPRS etc.

Our Club and member's Public Liability Insurance is with Thistle Underwriters using a Broker.   

Personal property needs to be insured through your household policy.

walker midgley do specialist modellers insurance, i only ever did the 3rd party with them but they were great at that time,


now i have cover via my club so dont do my own 3rd party anymore

our group are due to hold an open yacht meet later in the year , but the national body require third party insurance in order to race , with around ten models from sail to quick electric scale & a hovercraft i cant see the point of joining one group just to cover one of my models ?

It is usually the landowner (normally the local council) who insists on insurance cover normally to a minimum of £5m Third party liability. Anyone using their waters with or without their permission have to provide evidence of such cover if requested. If you are not insured and an accident occurs, you are on you own!  Ask the big show organisers they even have to take out extra cover for public liability when running these shows ! It's called duty of care.

Be careful with some of the "main insurers" as my club only has public liability at a designated club event, so if you decide to go off by yourself one fine day!!! then you may not have benefit of the club insurance.  That's why I have my own as well.  I have helicopters as well which is why my choice is BMFA.
These also offer a modellers insurance now (I don't know much about it) but I think it covers theft and damage etc).

Most club insurance policies cover each individual member in their own right, depends who your club is insured with, but it is worth checking. Cover for theft and damage is normally an add on and of course comes with an added premium cost !

M A P stood for Model and Allied Publications and was the myHobbystore group about 3 takeovers ago, I also remember the names Argus Specialist Publications and Nexus Special Interests being publishers of Model Boats and other modelling titles over the years. M A P sold modellers Public Liability Insurance through the magazines until, if memory serves, a previous government introduced legislation that meant you had to be registered as an insurance broker to sell insurance policies, and obviously it was not worth the hassle or the expense  for a small specialist publisher.
 
Currently I use an insurance broker called Walker Midgley who advertise in the modelling press and also have a stand at various modelling shows. They sell a policy from Royal and Sun Alliance called 'Select Insurance Cover for Individual Modellers & Model Engineers',  which does what it says on the tin, offering Public Liability Insurance, and also cover for models and workshop equipment, if required.
