If the thread was to show how to safely operate and build a steam plant then you have failed.
If the thread is to be deliberately inflammatory to experienced steam builders who simply offered advice then you have succeeded.

Very nicely done, modmanMax.
The wee blip over Max's "on bench" installation should be forgiven, as it was addressed at the time, Frazer. <*<

The in-boat installation is very neat and tidy, congratulations.
Runs nice.
I have a Midwest Mark VI steam engine kit, which is to go into a similarly sized and looking model of ss Puke, built in 1872 and now on active duty at the National Maritime Museum ( Voyager ), in Auckland, NZ.
This will be my 'first' steam launch, drawings being prepared as we speak.
Well done, a nice effort. :-))
cheers

I maintain there was nothing dangerous in what I did and the video shows it working perfectly safely. If someone is careless having metal or plastic pipe is probably not going to make any difference, same if you put an idiot behind the wheel of a car bad things will happen. Yes gas can be dangerous, don't mess with it if you don't know what your doing. Don't drive if you don't know what your doing.

My intention is not to offend but I am not going to bow down to political correctness because I might hurt your feelings, I think you need to respect other opinions even if they don't agree with yours, right or wrong.

Can we now please move on.

ModmanMax
After watching some of your other vidios, I tend to agree with your views of the whole affair!
You appear to have a good very grasp of playing with the type of steam plants that you are comfortable with.
I, and others, have different ideas and different concepts of what is right and wrong.
So What!!!!
What I believe is probably wrong too!!!
Go for it, your boat seems to satisfy yourself, don't let others dictate what YOU want.
Mick
ps. how are the 2 ocillators connected?? It seems to me that they use a sky-hook arrangement.

My 2 pennies worth. Something good to come from this post is knowing the dangers, then steps can be taken to avoid them. I have worked with machines all my working life, knowing the danger alway kept fingers out of the way. Until last week a simple sander NO Danger I though, almost took the tops of 2 fingers off. Know the danger. Hammer

I can never understand why some manufacturers go to the expense of fitting a safety valve with all the inherent problems of having to check whether it works when a simple piece of sillycone rubber (much cheaper) works just as well?

They are simply pushed together and bolted to a brass base plate. I turned the crank around on the rear engine and matched up the 2 crank plates. The rear one is a loose fit on the crank of the front one. It is the same way professionally made units are fabricated. The fly wheel on the rear engine has been machined down so it clears the con rod and a crank fitted. Pretty simple really. I also removed a lot of excess material on the bottom of cylinders to improve performance.

I suspect you could have machined away almost all of the rear flywheel to save some weight  - if the flywheel will bring one cylinder back to valve opening, it will surely bring two, especially if they are 180 offset. These oscillators look very like the USE engines which were designed to be banked up in line or at 90 degrees.

They are similar, I bought the USE(less) but the quality of machining was very poor but they did give me the idea. I happen to have 2x 980s and only one boiler so that is how it came about.
I did consider machining the back fly wheel down more but flywheel weight is not a bad thing in a non self starter to help prevent stalling.

Another performance improvement which I think all Midwest engines could benefit from is replace the spring for a lighter mamod spring.
The Midwest spring is quite stiff and is sapping power from the engine. Replacing the spring has improved the performance no end.

Some tweaking a 55mm prop and lighter springs and she goes a whole lot better.

I did consider it but decided not to in the end. A bit of muck adds character. ok2
