Spray coated Chrome colour plastic profiles
« on: February 08, 2013, 03:45:00 pm »

:(( I have a problem with plastic profiles which I have coated with primer and Chrome spray.
Now they are dry the Chrome turns grey as soon as I touch them.
The Chrome coating does not seem to be fully dry.
I have left them for 5 days before use.
Can anyone offer advise please.

Don't touch them!......................... <*<

sorry couldn't resist that. Is the primer compatible with the chrome finish - hopefully it would say on the tin? Does it need a primer?
I know you can get a similar reaction with chrome parts on vehicles for example, if they have just been polished - oxidisation or similar reaction I assume.
Perhaps a spray on seal of varnish or something?

The primer used is a grey multi purpose primer from Wilco
The Chrome spray is Plasticote chrome
Question. Could it be a reaction between the primer and the plastic?
If so what can I do?
Thanks all

It would seem likely that there are compatibility issues somewhere in the process. Have you tried using the chrome without primer on a spare piece of the same plastic?

I'm sure Stavros the resident paint technical advisor may have some more specific pointers.

I have done a lot of testing with "chrome" finish aerosol paint, they will end up bright silver, and not a mirror chrome finish, except alclad. Its expensive though, but gives a true chrome finish. Here is an example of  alclad chrome for lexan, these scoops are painted from the inside, then backed with black, check out alclads website

Its just my opinion, I keep using plasticote and getting a good result seems to take a lot of attempts, it seems to be a very "temperamental" paint, for example, I recently painted new plastic card, primed with plasticote plastic primer, undercoated with plasticote and final coat with plasticote, being very careful  in the process, no greasy finger prints etc, after a week of careful painting, the final coat had some sort of reaction and went terrible, the piece being thrown away, I keep saying I will not use plasticote again but go back to it as I have a shed full of it, but not again, its been disappointing too many times >:-o

There seems to be numerous types of this Alclad chrome ie. various numbers
on the bottles. Can you tell me what one you have used (Alclad for Lexan).
Would the number be 114 or 107?
Does look to be a decent chrome finish.
Thanks
