PUFFIN MK2 HORIZONTAL BOILER
« on: February 21, 2013, 01:54:06 pm »

I have a basic question with this unit. It is fitted with a ceramic burner but do not have the operating instructions so I am uncertain of the correct proceedure to light it. I presume and recall that it's just a question of putting a match to the funnel, with the gas on very low, and it flares back to the burner and lights.

As a follow on from this is there any harm in just dropping a lighted match down the funnel and leaving it there. As the boiler design on the Mk2 is straight through there would seem to be no risks of choaking any flues?

I do have steam experience and have run a Chedder horizontal Puffin Mk2 with the blow lamp burner for many years but this is my first venture with a ceramic job. It all seemend very clear when i started the build years ago!

The model is Velox a pre WW1 destroyer at 1/48 scale, so about 60 inches long. The engine is my own design/build double acting in line oscilator about the same size as a standard Puffin unit.

Thanks

Geoff

I don't think ash on the burner is a good idea. I use a domestic gas lighter. From another Geoff

Mike I have been watching your engine builds, and do admire your efforts. I am thinking you wish to see the frist Geoff's Velox. I am the second Geoff to post here ( hammer) I have two steam driven paddlers. One build thread can be seen on.

Mike to save you time, although I think there are lots to interest an experimenter like you in the hole thread.  Pages 35-36 &40-41 show the most of the boiler & engine. Both my own design & build.  I also have a boiler built of domestic water pipe to look the link here. Hammer.
