What does "Sub C" mean
« on: February 20, 2013, 05:34:05 pm »

What is the meaning of "Sub C" when describing NiMh packs, and what is the difference between a normal pack and a racing pack?

Thanks, Terry.

The answer to the first question is it describes the size - smaller than a C size Alkaline battery.

The difference between 'normal' and 'racing' packs is that 'racing' packs use hand selected cells so they all follow (as near as possible) identical charge and discharge curves and voltages.

A C cell is 26.2X50mm, a Sub-C is 22.2X42.9mm, but generally, they cover the same capacity ratings.
A handy list of battery sizes here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_battery_sizes
Although there is a world-wide industry standard, its always plus or minus a bit.

Bit smaller than a U11 then?  %)  Never used to be a problem when we had "Flat" batteries and U2s U11s and Pencells. Flamin Yankyology again.

Believe it or not but the sub C was developed as the best power to weight ratio for model aircraft, I think by Varta.  That is it was for the technology at the time (1960's).
