I always wanted to do a sunken U-Boat. So, got a rather small scale model and could not do it due to my disability...so, tried again and got a 1:125 scale Revell U-99 kit.
Once the kit was stripped from the sprues it was deburred and cleaned, then the fun began with doing damage/rust holes, drilling out the vent holes, inserting a pressure hull segment+pipe work through the saddle tanks.
Then it was detailed, paint, washes etc.
I have enclosed some pictures, not bad for a first attempt.
Various stages of coatings and effects.

Would you mind giving a bit more info on how you did the effects?

No problems at all.
Once the basic plastic kit had dried the surface was very lightly sanded using a fine grade sandpaper, once done this was then washed to remove any plastic bits and left to dry. Then the model is coated in PVA glue-you can glob this on as it all adds to the effect in places. Once coated in PVA glue you then sand the areas, for a more smooth, rough looking surface, if that makes sense, use a childs sandpit sand as this finer or just use any sand, try not to get too many large pieces sieve if you can. Once coated leave to dry then seal the sand, I used a can of car paint in a brown rust colour-this is applied and like any spray painting nice even strokes, leave to dry and deatail with sponge paint washes.
Just to add, that this method is a lazy modellers dream as you do not have to be too careful in deburring and coating as it is the effect you want-so it works. This method can be used on sunken ships etc. For a larger scale model I would be more inclined to spend more time building up the layers as the scale means you can see the detail more.

Cheers Jimmy. I trawled (see what I did there, being a nautical model forum.) pictures of sunken submarines to try and get a look between total rust and gaping holes to fresh, so the end was damage with concretion growth.

That is really good!
Could I say (as a former diver) that THAT is a realistic wreck. Hollywood has done us no favours in portraying underwater subs wrecked or otherwise.
Only point I could suggest would be to have some tattered bits of fishing net on the model.

Wow, thank you David for the kind words. I did research many pics to try and get the look of the model correct, it also depended on depth, many deep wrecks had little concretion while shallow wrecks tended to be rusted to bits, so a compromise of the two.
Funily I did toy with the idea of adding netting, but couldn't find any the right size.

LOL, yeah I suppose they do. I was going to try and do the pictures with a black background to give more effect. They do look creepy, the hatch in the sail I did in an open position...maybe the ghosts of the boat still lurk to trap unwanted visitors...

Do you mean straighten them Rich? I had an accident, dropped the boat due to my illness, then forgot about them. I see what you mean though, slightly off-centre, I'll see what I can do.

Ah, I see what you mean Rich. Yeah, some wrecks do have bent scopes, normally due to sail damage via bombs or depth charges, or due to shipping-trawl nets etc. But I have seen some with them bent out of shape.
