looking for a smoke generator
« on: February 04, 2013, 04:47:13 pm »

I am looking for a smoke geneerator for the Douglas Greg (Dwight Hartman) tug. I have a JJC smoke generator and really like it, but I understand they are out of business. Any suggestions that would work in this tug?

Is the JJC unit a 'cold smoke' unit?

If so, try  www.marksmodelbits.com

Yes Martin, the JJC uses water to create the smoke, which I prefer. The others use oil which can leave an oily film on the model. Thanks for the suggestion for the supplier.
all the best for now, the fatboy

The Steam Master looks like a great unit, but here in Canada we are on 75 MHZ, so I guess it won't work for me. I would have to buy an new 2.4 GHZ radio to make it work here.

I don't think it makes a difference what kind of radio gear you have, as its not directly connected to the RX

I think you'll find that the Steam Master does connect to the receiver but the transmitting frequency of the radio is irrelevant as long as the signal produced will work a standard servo (i.e. a +5v pulse @ between 1mS and 2mS ). Looks like a nice bit of kit, although it is expensive - we saw one at Waverley Models and even MM was impressed! He usually manages to make his own FX for nowt out of tuna cans!

Dave.

I get the impression that you need to by the FULL kit with the control board.
The TANK kit is the tank smoke unit only, and you would need the control board from
another unit to make it run properly. But once you have a FULL kit, you can install the tank
kit into several other models, and then move the control board to the model you are running for the day.

Have a look at Modelwarshipsunderway website , "how to" section. There are pictures and design of a smoke generator I made some years ago.

Good luck

Thanks for the suggestion essex, but I contacted the company and they sent this reply:

There is no spec on these from the manufacturer.  We cannot really recommend this product and we have no plans to order in any more in the near future.
So it looks like we won't be getting one of these units.

Then there's this one http://www.harbormodels.com/site08/main_pages/smoker.htm
It works on 12 volts, too.

I have a 'Foggy' unit from Marks Model Bits.
No special liquids, runs on tap water.  No heat, just 0.7A  They start at £45.
I've had mine running for almost an hour without refilling.  See photo.

One diadvantage, requires 24V.  ie:  2 x small 12V battery packs

If you are good at hacking the water type smoke generators work on the same principle as the misters for terrariums.  I have picked a couple of them up at second hand stores at low prices.

Marks model bits also does a 24v inverter to go with foggy.
smaller and lighter than batteries.

just wondering what turns the water into steam? Is there a vibrator or high temp. wire?

It is not steam (hot) but mist.  Produces cold water vapour, similar to fog or clouds.

The smoke / mist is created by a small high frequency ceramic membrane unit
that vibrates the water into a dense mist which is then blown through the funnel
by the fan. These ceramic discs are easy to replace and are obtainable from MMB.

If my description is wrong I,m sure I will be corrected.

You are correct John. It is water mist. As is produced in a nebulizer. For your infro E Bay pond misters. About £ 2.50 inc pnp. Cheap enough to have a play with. They are 24v and run ok on dc as well as stated ac.Get yourself a plastic box and an old computer fan, some 15mm plastic pipe fittings and Bobs your uncle. At least he might be. John.
