Best bench covering
« on: March 15, 2013, 04:32:48 pm »

Having spent an equal amount of time building and trying to find the piece I've just dropped and it's bounced off the bench, I tried an old car mat as a build surface.  That didn't seem to work either so what is the best "anti bounce" covering for a workbench?  or any idea for a worktop layout to prevent losing bits!

 %% The time I have spent looking under the bench for small screws and other bits that have rolled off the top of the bench,I have tried fitting a
bead round the edge but that caused other problems.I think modellers are fated to spend hours looking for that important part that we have
managed somehow to loose,I don't think there is an answer to this problem just try and be more careful.I found that on the rare occasion
that I hoover the workshop, I found all the bits I lost are in the bag.Ray. {-) {:-{

The right colour floor covering so parts can show up more easily is the best option I think .............. but don't ask me what colour............. I spend half the time on my knees! {-)

When doing metal work I have a dinner tray lined with magnetic tape on the table. It's a low power magnet but catches all my pins etc. Directly under the table I have a flooring of lino so anything dropped can be swept easily.. My table is boxed st the bottom so nothing can go outside the table bounds underneath and I tty yo keep the floor clear

I read somewhere, that some ladies Pantyhose, over the end of the vaccum cleaner hose, is a great way to find small dropped items.

But as for a bench cover. Do tell, as I also spend a lot of time on my knees looking....

I always use carpet to cover the bench.

I have found that the easiest solution to this problem is, at the start of each building session, pick up a handful of assorted modelling items, drop them on the floor and spend the next half hour looking for them.

Then, thats it, done, you have dropped and looked for (and maybe even found) the small bits for the day!

I got an old table from a local hospital store that was throwing stuff in a skip. It had 1/4" thick brown linoleum inlaid (similar to a leather inlay desktop). Glue doesn't stick to it. Things don't bounce off it and you can stick pins in it. Cuts seem to repair themselves.

I just have a large A0 cutting mat as my work surface (protecting the ercol table underneath) but it is in the space under the stairs and contains my home office too.

Hi grendel I use a cutting mat as well, I find it works well & was not expensive. Do you use double monitors on your computer, I do & have for a long time. The hull in the top of your picture looks interesting, what model is it ?. I like photography too & did non stop for over 25 years, it is a great hobby when you live where I do. Mick B,
