Hi Forum!

by chance I came across a ship named DITHMARSCHEN. It was built in 1873 with hull number 388 in London I think, Blackwall, by R nd H Green, for a German owner called Vorwerk Geb. & Co., Tonning. It was intended as a cattle carrier exporting livestock from North Germany to Britain. However, as it was a) unsuitable and b) foot and mouth broke out in England, she was employed elsewhere. Eventually she ended up in Chile, carrying nitrate to Eurrope and doing coastal trades in South America.

It was requisitioned in 1891/1892 during the Chilean civil war and served in the Navy as a troop transport under the original name.

After that, she was handed back to Owners who sold her to a Chilian Owner in 1891. Renamed ANITA, she was lost, stranded, on 24.7.193 20 nm WSW off cape Bio Bio.

Known dimensions:

552 GRT
776 ts dwt
LOA 72,05 m
Beam 8,6 m

Does that ring a bell?

Any chance the drawings of R and H Green shipyard got archived? Maritime Museum?

Any infor / guidance appriciated!

Cheers,
Lars

As no one has answered you on this question, may I suggest that you enquire on the Paddleducks website.  It is primarily a paddle boat enthusiasts club.
