Keil Kraft Eezebilt RAF Crash Tender
« on: March 09, 2013, 06:50:19 pm »

Scaled the plans to 130% to arrive at a bigger boat ( 26"). Build started on 24th Feb. I'm using 3mm ply and Foam Board in various thickness (2mm - 5mm) for this build. I've also managed to procure some drive sets with universal joints - this is a rarity in India.

This is where the build stands today. Yet to decide whether to do a brushed or brushless set up.

p.s. In the 7th. Picture, you can see the Mermaid alongside this model.

Coming together well.

What are you using to glue the foam board?

Thank you!

I'm using a CA that is specially formulated for Foam Board and Acrylate. Will strengthen all joints with epoxy before I apply the skins.

I've started work on the superstructure today. A lot needs to be done to modify/rectify the plans. The notches denoted on the plan aren't deep enough and will result in an incorrect profile. BEWARE!!!

Neither. You are talking about Thermocole. Depron is somewhat similar to Thermocole. This foam board is denser and heavier which makes it practically useless for aero modelling. PM me your address and I'll send you some samples of this stuff.

Cheers!

Oh no! This isn't getting anywhere. Circlip, that isn't what I am using. The link points to a lovely material (Foam Core Board) prized by aeromodellers. It is a sheet of depron (?) sandwiched between two laminates. The foam that I am using is very dense and, anything above 3mm, requires a bit of effort to cut with a modelling knife. It is Rigid PVC Foam Board. Ideal as a Balsa replacement for bulkheads, Superstructures and perhaps, Skinning (Must try that someday).

I am travelling outstation tomorrow and will be able to log in again only on Monday. Then I shall attempt to post close up / cross section photographs of Depron / The foam that I am using/ The foam pointed out by Circlip.

Cheers!

Edit: Thought I would do it right away. :-))

Rigid PVC Foam Board is available here in the UK and Ireland:

Just think what problems we had when there was only soft/medium/hard Balsa  {-)

Have seen the foamed PVC you're using VC, is there a manufacturers or product name on it?

Yes and the smell of Balsa and Adhesive was maddening. %% We didn't have cellphones or the net either. Life was easier, but then again, could we be in touch this way - half way across the world?  ok2

C'est la vie Mon Ami!

Completely forgo to post the progress photos for today.

Side decking added. Either I went wrong on the cut or the plan needs SERIOUS amendment. I will blame the former.
Visited the neighbourhood Car License Plate printer and got a template created for the FIRE lettering. Paste/ Spray/Wait/ Peel away - should be a cinch. Only time will tell.
Rudder made out of 6mm ply.

Work will resume on Monday again.

Have used foam board for all sorts during modelling, strong, very light - much lighter in weight and more rigid than styrene of equal thickness and once glued with cyano (even on edge) it ain't gonna come apart.  Have made boat stands, battery trays, servo boxes etc etc and of course it's waterproof.
Happy to make the same offer as VC Ian if you wish to pm me your address.
                                                 Regards, Tony.

Got some thanks Tony but mines in the form of a piece of extrusion used in the plastic window/door trade as a trim strip. Although one supplier sells both types, he refers to Foam PVC and paper/exp poly/paper both as foam board. If you regard the Paper/exp poly/paper, there is both expanded polystyrene  and polyurethane variants. The "original" (?) paper/styrene/paper was projected for use in toy aircraft years ago when there was a colossal increase in the price of Balsa by cutting shaped panels from it and glueing balsa strip to the "Open" edge. Then there's Depron  %)

Don't matter too much on a boat but weight might be a problem. Definitely will if used on topsides.

  Regards  Ian.

I just can't seem to be able to post any pictures here.
