prop lock nuts
« on: March 21, 2013, 03:11:15 pm »

Hello guys I,m just finishing my first model which is a Walter Raleigh   one in 96 scale. I,ve replaced the plastic  props with nice brass ones so how do I make sure they don't fall off on test ?  There's not really enough room for lock nuts,  so is Loctite OK ?   Thanks in anticipation- Simmarian

A little unusual to use loctite I would say, its a bit on the permanent side for
my liking. I chop and change props if the boat doesn't sail too well.
Props can be a bit too big or too small, so you should test out your boat on water first
then decide.
Locking the prop onto the shaft is the object of course but locknuts are preferred.

I would think loctite as in threadlock would be ok but not loctite as in superglue

%% Threadlock is ok,you can get half sized locknuts in 4&5 m/m sizes if this helps,I use both as I have lost expensive props in the past,
better safe than sorry.Ray >>:-( >>:-(

There are different strengths of loctite available
Someone on here will have the specific item.
I use loctite 243 lock and seal medium strength.
Works for me.

Hi Simmarian
[/size]Just a suggestion perhaps if you have a couple of spare nuts and a file you could make your own slim line lock nuts. 8)

Personally I wont use locktight, but what I do use is PAINT just put a drop of it on the shaft and put prop on,it is far easier to remove the prop at a later date as it still grips the shaft prop but it is not as fierce as locktight.Nail Varnish is another good one to use BUT for heavens sake DONT let the WIFE catch you  O0 O0 O0 {-) {-) {-) {-) {-)

:-) :-) Thanks for all your answers, I am curious about the paint one but had not thought about  filing down or customising  a pair of larger nuts. i shall try that one,   Many thanks Simmarian >

Stavros's paint suggestion works.

It is an old plumbers trick of the trade and stops leaking pipes.

Not much used these days, because of 'other' solutions.

I'd have thought Loctite would do as with a brass prop you could heat it to release it if you needed to.

Tobyker....I must agree with Ned's recommendation in the use of Loctite Grade 243 for relatively light duty securing of components as discussed here ....but too many people don't follow the manufacturers recommendations & neglect to use the appropriate primer  >>:-( ...then complain the joint was not successful
Another cause for complaint that the Loctite bonded joint could not be mechanically broken is in the use of ill fitting removal tools & spanners  >:-o
In real life applications....it is not uncommon to use inordinate amounts of heat    [oxy acetylene] to thermally degrade a Type 680 Loctite bond .....Derek
