Oh dear, doesn't look to hopeful for the pilot from the footage below. Can only hope he managed to eject but no sign of it in the clip.

I've seen the Red Arrows loads of times and this is a real shame, Dave.

there is an unconfirmed report of people going into the river to pull the pilot out so maybe a very late low level ejection , got to wonder if the engine flamed out just as the pilot started the turn to the right loosing all power without anything like enough height to restart the engine which could explain what happened , also there's houses and a park very close to where the plane came down and the pilot may have done their best to avoid ground casualties

There's bit more info on Sky News including a report with a family that saw it crash and tried to help. Trouble with low level flying, there's no room to recover if something goes wrong, Dave.

Just caught the end of the SKY news update , the pilot didn't make it , killed in the crash , RIP

It's just been updated on ITV4+1...

The pilot apparently ejected, but he was too low....hit the ground just after the 'chute opened.

Rest in peace, sir...

Very sad news, the pilot has been named as 33-year-old Jon Egging, who joined the team this year as Red Four. My thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues. I hope they find out what went wrong and this won't be used as another excuse for winding the team up. Dave.

Very sad news. Ive been following this story all day on news 24. I thought it was a bit strange them not saying the pilot was OK which in my book only meant one thing.

We'll see what develops over the next few days and if a cause can be found.

It's beginning to look like a bird strike causing an engine to flame out could have been the cause of the crash...

whenever or wherever you see them they are still the best .what great ambassadors they are for this country.my greatest thrill was being at the top of the CN Tower,in Toronto,Canada,and watching them performing BELOW us.I hope they are allowed to carry on. Sympathies to the Family of the Pilot

Oh no, I just can't believe tragedy has struck the Reds again. My deepest sympathies go out to the team and friends and family of the pilot. I've followed them for as long as I can remember. They're the best in the world, I just hope in this time of budget cuts the tragic accidents this year won't be used against them. Dave.

In July last year they found a fault in the ejector seat and I believe the whole fleet was grounded until it was fixed.

Why should budget cuts be used to ground the Arrows? The Mk.10 is used in all the Hawk trainer aircraft, seems like an excuse to stop training pilots to fly jets? I wonder what the fault on the seats was earlier in the year? Zero-Zero ejection seats (ability to fire whilst on the runway and the pilot survive) have been around for decades, but it does rely on the canopy not being there. It's bad enough losing ones life in an aircraft accident let alone from a piece of safety equipment.

Condolences to the family and the rest of the worlds formost display team.

If the canopy isn't there then there's no reason to use the seat. The canopy must be closed and locked before you can initiate ejection. Depending on the aircraft, the canopy is jettisoned as the first step in the sequence - if it fails to jettison or no canopy jettison system is fitted, then as the seat starts to move it detonates the MDC which removes the transparency to allow the seat to go through it.

There is if the aircraft is taking off or landing (But not in this case, it looks that the A/C was parked), it relies, as you stated, on the canopy or transparency being disposed of by the pyro charges. From the Footage shown, it looks like the canopy frame was still there. We'll have to wait and see what the enquiry reveals.

The Hawk canopy has a side-hinge so opens 'up and to the right' which is why the frame is still there - all RAF aircraft with zero-zero seats, (apart from Tornado, and IIRC Typhoon), use MDC to allow the seat to go through the canopy.

Inquiry states that the seat went off after completing ground checks with the pilot strapped in. Seems the parachute deployment system failed ultimately.

Seems that the seat parachute didn't deploy. Case has now been handed to the CPS by the Police.
