What do I do with this?
« on: March 17, 2013, 03:34:28 pm »

My dad was given this by a friend, its made from wood which has been carved and other parts built up bread and butter style. The motors are knackered and the props are way too big because they catch each other, and the rudder seems to be manually adjusting- no way of adding a servo at this stage. The model weighs a lot and is about 2.5ft long and resembles a Type VII U-boat. The rear section is damaged and missing but would not take much to make a new piece and there is a split in the hull on the starboard side which can be re-sealed. Has anyone built a submarine like this before? Seems a shame to consider scrapping it because the workmanship is actually quite good. Was considering giving it to Steamboat Phil for a straight runner {-) and put a flash steam boiler in it  %% .
Any ideas?

Hmmm?

the first which came to my mind was this OPERATION DEADLIGHT:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Deadlight

BUT, since many years this retro-model thingy is in my head!

We are nowadays able to build such fine models, while at the ame time you can pay grizzillion pounds for
re-made toys of the 1920/30/40s...

Why not "restore" the boat the way it is. Make it technically sound but keep the looks...

It would look like a boat at the model pond in the 1950s...

Kind of cool!

Cheers,
Lars

That's a very good idea Lars,

Gives me something to do between big projects!
Will need some new props, prop shafts and motors but everything else will original or made to look original, just needs a clean up and a fresh coat of paint.

By any chance, are the props counter-rotating and can clear each other?

You guys know what?

There was an episode in Avengers, with John Steed and Emma Peel, "Two's a Crowd" in 1966,
where a guy they want to meet is shot at a lake by a remote control submarine!

Somehow, this little grey ugly duckling remembers me of that scene!

Actually, thinking about it...that scene possibly has triggered my interest in ship models...

(Well, Diana Rigg for sure initiated my interest in other important things in life! %% )

He he!

Cheers!

  Sin chro ni zation?

Would require same sized meshed gear on each propshaft to achieve this.

I can only see one motor. Maybe there is a gear box. Or maybe my eyes are playing up.

Hi everyone

Just to confirm, there are two motors in the hull, both in a less than brilliant condition, I don't think there is any possibility of them being synchronised.
I'm also a big fan of The Avengers  so I'm going to be watching that episode this weekend to spot that sub!
I know what you mean about Diana Rigg, she kept me interested whilst I watched the entire box set of the Avengers during my detachment to the Falklands!

If you think Diana Rigg looked good on T/V you should see her up close,Gorgeous comes to mind. I once shook her hand at a race she came to start at Shennington, she is extremely tall I think over 6 ft. Needless to say I did not wash my hand for a week, LOL. Mick B.

Hi lads
If the props were counter rotating one would have to be a pusher or the boat would travel in ever decreasing circles those blades appear to be angled in the same direction.

Hi everyone

Thanks for the suggestions so far, I'll be cleaning it up over the Easter weekend taking the motors out and vacuuming up the years of dust and alike sitting inside the hull. As suggested we are going to keep the hull and superstructure as it is apart from a bit of tarting up with paint and sealing the cracks up!
We will remove the prop shafts and rudder for the moment and see what we can fit in.

Mick B- you are very lucky meeting Diana Rigg and I am very envious  :-))

Nick,

hmmm,...for obvious reasons, am I right to assume that the below would be the tarting up YOU would prefer?
