Genie, a Silly Question
« on: March 23, 2013, 10:41:02 am »

Just received the plans for this boat from My Hobby Store, the quality is not good, for the example the drawing with the various sail dimensions is nearly unreadable, but I can worry about that when necessary. My problem is that the plan shows the hull built over Formers, or Shadows, now, do these Shadows stay in the hull or is the skin not attached to them? It seems to depict a Vane Steering model but that is relatively simple to alter, Question is , Do I leave the Formers or Shadows in the sheeted hull? Also as I have no access to 3mm ply of this length I thought that 3mm balsa sheet and glassed inside and out should do the trick.Yes?

hi is that the vic smeed plan.I built it a few years back and the formers are removed, personally i wouldnt build it in balsa .Be too easily damaged during racing. At one time there was 8 local skippers on Genie,s .Great boats when raced against each other but outclassed against modern boats. We made our sails from ripstop nylon and all the boats were RC.I no longer have the plans so cannot give you sail dimentions :-)) :-))

General practise is to remove the formers, although, personally, I would leave the first one in to give added strength to the bows. Also a good idea to have a piece of wood going from the first former to the bow to transfer any shock back to that former.

There are 3 balsa planked marbleheads at our club, so balsa is an option, although you would have to cover the outside with cloth & resin to give strength. The insides are coated in just resin, but agian would be an idea to reinforce the inside seams with a little cloth too.
