1/5th Scale Bikes
« on: December 18, 2006, 08:50:44 am »

Hi All

While I will never leave building model boats and I'll  assure John that I will finish the Meteor

I have bought a 1/5th scale electric Ducati 999 bike as an other modelling interest. The World Championship was held at Brookland near
Ashford in the summer. This was the first every champion finals (that I know of ) of these bikes. Next year I believe it will be held in Italy. There is a DVD out available from Radio Race Cars International, all about this exciting hobby.

Have a wee look at my bike currently unmodified

hi sinjon
If you get good enough you race them the world championship. You have got to learn how to control them modify and tune them up

Have a look at the 1/5th bike in action on the video above on this thread...enjoy

By the looks of the end of the video you also have to learn to miss obstacles on the road....

the local schools netball court should be handy for the bike aswell,
i know the schools round here have a high upkeep of the playgrounds so kids dont hurt themselves when they go bum over face so to speak.

theres plenty more videos on the dpccars website that should keep you busy.

Hi I have 1/5 scale bike too, powered by a Novarossi 12, great bike, have taken it around Brooklands in Kent and over my local car park, not been run now for 2 years as all the car parks round here are now open all day Sunday or are full of speed bumps, where abouts are you situated? have you got anywhere near you to run the bikes? would like to give it another run!
Cheers

Hi Jay
All the schools now adays seem to be all locked up after classes finish any way it would attract too many people when your practicing Although I stay in the countryside and there is one or two flat place which would come in handy.I would prefer to run the bike with other modellers to get that knack of competing with them.

Hi Biscuit
Very nice bike who is the manufacture Thunder Tiger ?

My next bike will be a nitro one (Thats a glow engine to us oldies)I have two circuits near to me one is Brookland near Ashford (not to be confused with Brooklands car race track the old one with the slanted track, what is left of it.) The other is Barham near Canterbury both in Kent. I am looking for one near my neck of the woods Rochester.

There is a car club associated with the local model shop. They run indoors in a big hall might be able to get in there.

two site addresses of 1/5th bike forums  to look at

Hi Martin, No its an Italian NF 501, Thunder Tiger copied it, how they got away with it I shall never know. Anyway I have raced an electric bike at barham about a year ago don't think I could ever find that track again, kind of tucked out of the way. You cant run I/C at Barham anyway, I was just looking for a space to meet up and have a bit of fun, been racing all my life I sort of just like messing about now and having a laugh, used to race the 1/8 scale Kyosho bikes years ago up north, Its still pretty big up there, 1/5 scale now at the Skipton club, so if you know of anywhere with a nice bit of flat tarmac let me know. Here is a pic of some of my Kyosho bikes, the tatty leaning rider Honda NSR is brushless powered just mental, have runners, new built, and new in the box kits, yeah you could say I am a bit into my bikes!
Cheers

How about a bit of Motorcross?? This is a Ricky Carmichael bike, not sure of the scale but its big as you can see by the size of it sitting on my telly. Made a load of ally bits for it, great fun off road, has a gyro in the back wheel so it just stays upright no matter what surface your on, so this gets used a bit more as you can take it anywhere.

Hi Steve
I work nights so late and early posts are common to me. so post anytime. I can only get to these posts at the weekend.

Didn't know that only electric bikes ran at barham thats a bit of a let down.

Certainly got a lot of bikes there.and very nice too.Do like the bike on the telly. I haven't unpacked mine yet just pulled out of the box to make sure all the bits were there

I've been enquiring about next years Championships in Italy (Moto 5 forum I am Dell) and was hoping to go in some way.Was trying to see if there was a supporters coach going or room on the national team plane/coach.Need to keep at them being a pain in the bum at they might get somewhere with it.

How do you keep your bikes clean after a run it the wet/rain or dirty track.

Well Martin, normally a complete strip down, but if you got your Rx in a balloon you should get away with a wipe down between heats. I got to be honest with you and say I never raced in the wet! a lot of our racing was done inside with the 1/8 scales, think I might of raced at the old Halifax track when it was damp, seen video of 1/5 scale in the wet and they still fly round 1/8 bikes never had a lot of grip, got so many choices now with the 1/5 bikes loads of tires out there, anyway good luck with your new venture, and if you find any car park or space to run let me know.
Cheers
Steve.
PS err, going back to boats, just wondered if you new anything about my SC 61 motor, having so much trouble to get it to run right, have put a few posts in but not no ones really come up with an answer, and if it don't go next time its an e-bay job, shame really.

Hi Steve
I had a SC years ago in a biplane first thing was to sell it as it was too powerful for a 28 in model

Starting from scratch that the glow plug in o.k this is a big thing with  glows sometime since i used one I liked the type withe the bar across the bottom of the threads this help with idling so OK and right type for engine

fuel correct type of fuel with regards the mixture of the oil quantity used and always shake the fuel before putting into the tank in line filter clean bottom of tank clean too.

check all screws nuts on engine are tight flywheel too also check alignment to shaft is OK and also look at the needle jet see that it is smooth no pips on sureface the entrance for needle jet is clear and the hole for the fuel to be sucked into the Ventura is clear.

Tuned piped is at the max revs position you'll hear the revs change as you move it this is important thing with tuned piped

check that the inside shaft hasn't been over tightened by the nuts on the outer shaft some shaft are greased but my experience is the grease can slow down the revs

make sure you have a gas tight fit on all your exhaust system as I had an engine that wouldn't rev till I discover it was running  on it own exhaust fumes

no cracks or pin holes on fuel line and tight fit over nipples also the feed pipe back to the silencer is clear to giving you pressure in the fuel tank.
the servo turning the throttle arm is working look down the Ventura see all is well

cooling system is correct to much water cools engine too much and it get hotter and hotter a clip on the line adjust to a nice trickle of luke warm water on the outlet is what I always looked for.

I take it you have run the engine in ?
Only some of the problems I've had with I.C. boats

Lets know how you get on least you can run it in the garden in an old water tub unlike the bikes

 Hi Martin,
I was trying to run it in with a pump circulating the water around the head, think I might of over cooled the engine, as it has now lost compression and there is a mark on the side of the piston. The thing I don't understand is that the engine would start but when you opened the throttle it would cough and splutter way to rich, so you leaned it out a touch and it would clear a little, but when you shut down it would go all lean and rev its head off with the carb shut, Dave at Prestwich Models said you have to have the Idle mixture screw nearly all the way out then lean the top down?? so thats what I will try next. Stuck a new rear bearing in it as it was a little rough, don't know why the engine was brand new still got a good pop when you turn it over, as I said it aint what it was but that might be a good thing as the compression was so high it was a real pain to turn it over on the starter, if you think of any think else Martin drop me a line Merry Christmas,
Steve

Hi Steve

don't over tighten your glowplug too tight and make sure the copper washer does compress you may get a way with using the washer a few times a little tighter each time.and there is no dirt in that area around where the glow goes in.i once got cigarette ash in there causing the same problem as you .Also you haven't had a hydraulic lock on the engine i.e. too much fuel in the top of piston and the engine was forced over this could bend your conrod.Don't like the idea of a scratch on the piston. I usually start the engines with a turn and a half on the needle one turn with finger over carb intake till fuel reaches the needle then just a one turn to put fuel in crankhousing.Turn engine (need to learn the sound of your engine it will tell you what way adjustment is required.) I try and start engine on this setting you know if it fires revs high it is too lean and if kicks back too rich. Note if too rich I remove plug turn needle to off rotate engine to clear out bore reinsert plug return needle to remembered position then turn needle in a quarter a turn try again. shouldn't have needed to replace bearing hard luck on that.if you have engine out of boat set it up on a bench run to try and solve the prob.I never ever did like SCs I am a Japanese engine person.or possibly German.Might have to change piston and liner as they are match. no leaks on head gasket ? flywheel tight ? enough backlash play on crankshaft ( move flywheel forward and backwards should hear a little quiet click.)
let me know how it goes.

Martin

more...... is the needlejet being turned with the throttle arm is there is lug that stops the needlejet from selfturning I think the fault lies around the fuel delivery needlejet/ventura/exit hole on needlejet bar Pressure to tank from exhaust. Was this a rtr model or self build ? i had problems once with needle jets I was working on a Frog.80 diesel and a DC.79 when finished they both were terrible at running.A later discovered I had put the  needle jets in the wrong engines. Looks like you have a bitch and a half engine If it fire up try and run it just rich enough to keep it 4 stroking for a long long time it might free itself

Hi,
Sorry, this may seem a bit of a silly question but do the bikes balance themselves or do you have to correct the balance by turning.  I love the look of them, but wondered how hard they are to race.
There is a local track that i suppose would be ideal, so was wondering about them. Might be able to persuade dad to let me get one! ;D ;D

Hi Sam H
Yes they have balance built into them just like the real bikes and have side bars (loops of wire)to keep upright when cornering tightly.

Radio Race Car Magazine has an article spot for these bikes in their monthly magazine

I have just read about the Nuova Faor bike in the April 06 mag.(just catching up on my reading) I also think they have done one on the Ducatti 999
Check out the video which was in an earlier post on this thread

http://www.dpccars.com/rcvideos/09-27-06page-Ducati-RC-motorcycle.htm

There is a knack in driving them more than a car cause of the 2 wheels also there is a DVD out via the above mag called Moto Lean Machines which explaines a lot about these bikes. It also has the first ever world Championships at Brookland Kent About £14.99
Good Luck

Hi Kmot

Very nice looking bike n sounds fast too. I like the idea of useing R clips unlike the press fits I've got on the Ducatti

Check out reply 10 for the bike forums if your interested.
