DECAPERM...WHY SO EXPENSIVE?
« on: April 05, 2013, 12:26:23 am »

I have got a Decaperm 12v 2.75:1 gear ratio motor in a large barge. Now I am new to this boating lark so ESC, motors etc are still on a learning curve, but, I know that some folk rave over Decaperm while others think they have had there day and just overpriced. There is my motor on Ebay going for £30! And new I have found one going for £142!! So, why are they so chuffing expensive? I have taken the motor cowling off and it is just a plastic gog that changes the ratio, so we are not talking hi-tec alloys here so...what gives?

 Hi Si.
a little history the decaperm and his big brother hectoperm are made in Germany and were for a long time the only geared
motors around that were available to the scale modeller.  With these motors you knew they would be able to cope with a
certain size and pitch of prop with out any deliberation.  Like everything else the price has increased to the point where you
would only be able to buy them 2nd hand on flea bay.  In the uk we had very little manufactured in the way of electric motors
for model boats till @ 1980`s as most people used the small glow plug engines.

...WHY SO EXPENSIVE?

For the same reason Myford lathes are. Myth surrounded by a strong odour of bovine excrement. When the super efficient Deca/Hecta's first hit the market, the competition was battery thirsty opponents. Although not too bad in comparison to todays rare earth magnet technology, they are best polished and viewed through a sheet of glass or deposited for sale to those with shallower pockets than common sense.
The plastic moldings could now be getting a bit brittle.

Have a look for quality industrial motors like Buhler, Maxon, Portescap and Pittman. Available at very reasonable cost on ebay etc.

These are more than a match for the Marx motors, which are ludicrously overvalued as Ian says. However you do have to know how to read a datasheet, and know how to match a prop to a motor- not difficult but a lot of modellers don't want to make the effort.

Many thanks guys, appriciate your input. The motor runs okay and the plastic seems in good order so will leave in the boat and use that for now.
