« on: April 08, 2013, 06:54:16 pm »

I have a water cooled esc which runs forward ok but will not run in reverse,it bleeps a lot and as I am new to brushless set ups I have not got
a clue, the makers state that it has reverse,Ray.  :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X

Makers of these things have tended to be a bit casual when describing reverse, not least because few manufacturers have any real idea what model boat requirements are.  Some ESCs work like regular brushed types - stick forward gives forward, centre is off, stick back is reverse.  Some have a procedure to get into reverse, involving a full pull back to brake for a second or so, then maybe an arming pulse, then it controls in reverse.  Some will work properly, but setting up might need reading of the instructions an/or use of a programming card.
For a sensible answer, letting us know what make and model will help and attract the attention of someone who actually knows.

you need to download the manual for your esc's. If im not mistaken thoise birdie esc's are cheap because they dont have reverse, they are forward only. Have you got a link to where you purchased it?

Couldn't find the actual one, but a 200A version that features water cooling says in the spec under programming -

Brake: No Brake/Soft/Medium/Hard
Direction: Clockwise/Counter Clockwise

- which, considering the name, I would guess that this was originally intended for flight, but the marine version has water cooling.  The spec that I found only mention "peak" power and "burst", but not continuous.  I would question the numbers, as well.
The bit about "direction" being "clockwise/counter clockwise" could mean that it can be programmed to turn the motor either way until the next time it gets programmed, or it might mean that there is a programming option to give it a proper reverse.  I can't decide whether the spec writer was being sloppy and trying to impress someone, or whether there was low cunning involved with the intention of telling the truth, but giving the wrong impression for profit.  My inclination, where the spec is written in pseudo-technical marketese is to move on to a different product.
However, that kind of power (assuming it can actually deliver) suggests use in a fast boat that doesn't have a lot of use for going backwards.

%% Hi,Graig, that's the one,I can live without reverse as the boat is a fast cabin cruiser, just that I got the impression that it had reverse, next
time I will buy a more expensive one.I have checked the current under load and it is running about 35-40amps with 55m/m 4 blade prop so
it should have spare capacity, anyway thanks for your help mate, its all a learning curve for me as this is my first brushless model, cheers Ray. {-) {-) {-) {-)

the description is a little ambiguous.... what they mean is that the esc can run the motor clockwise or anticlockwise (By changing 2 of the 3 wires on the ESC)
Don't worry I was caught out the same way a few years back

where it states max current that is the continous current, the burst current is the spike current. Judging by the reviews it doesnt seem to be to bad but on the disscussions it is reccomended to water proof this esc. Ive water proofed esc's in the past in epoxy. They kept the esc's dry just fine. heres the manual for esc and what the beeps means:
