Airfix's 1/72nd scale Fairmile D Dogboat.
« on: April 08, 2013, 02:38:11 pm »

That got your attention - I hope.

I have been pestering the Old Firm for one of these for a couple of years now. So yesterday when I was at Cosford for the Shropshire Model Show I got a chance to to talk to a really nice bloke called Jeremy from the Airfix Collectors society (I think) wherever he came from he blew my mind.

In 1981, Airfix had actually started making the plans up for one of these to complement their E Boat and to accompany a PT 109 model, all in 1/72nd scale. The plans were never completed and I think the kit would have appeared about 1984 ish.
These documents still exist.

He also told me some of the plans Airfix had which were scuppered by the 1981 Toy Fair - I'm not sure exactly why this particular event was so momentous, but I'm guessing it wasn't a good thing. Various tanks and aircraft were due to appear, but all went to the wind.

If you do get a chance to talk to Airfix a Dog boat really would be the puppy's privates.

Hi Steve

For my 1/72nd Fairmile D models I used one of the Airfix Vosper MTB kits for the guns and fittings which are very good, and scratchbuilt the deckhouse on one of my GRP hulls, if you click on the website icon under my avatar you will find yourself on my Flickr page, scroll down where the little white hulls are there are a few photos of the Fairmile D hull. There are also pics further up showing a couple of completed models, one as an MTB and one as an RAF LRRC version. The later model hull with scallops now has them moulded into the hull, without the foredeck moulding. I am just putting the finishing touches to the E-Boat hull to suit the Airfix kit, which has a very inaccurate boxy hull.

That was pretty much a long the lines of what I was thinking, using Airfix parts to build a dog. The big thing for me was constructing the hull. Something I have not had much experience of.

I don't suppose you'd consider parting with a copy of one of yours?

That was when Airfix went bust just before the Toy fair and it was a fair while before General Millls picked up the pieces

The way this guy was speaking it seemed like something had happened at the Toy Fair as well, but that is past history. Oh well.

As a result of this I am a little closer to realising my dream of owning a 1/72nd scale Dog boat.
