Portsmouth Model Boat Display Team
« on: April 17, 2013, 05:34:12 pm »

Wearing my Secretarys hat,I would like to say on behalf of the members of the HMS RAMILLIES ASSOCIATION,A great big vote of grateful thanks to the lads of the Portsmouth Model Boat Display Team, for putting on such an out of this wold display for us,at Canoe Lake all so friendly to our party, and took the time to explain everything they were asked.
The Team had to book the lake, rope it off, obtain permission to put on the display, and to use pyrotechnics, and apply for a licence. All their equipment had to be taken to the pool and returned after use, amongst many other things. The display with first galleons, and then corvettes was really something special with the sounds and effects.THANK YOU ONE AND ALL.

A link to the article in the local paper.
Our members thoroughly enjoyed the day at the lake entertaining the veterans of the HMS Ramilles Association. We considered it a privelege to offer our display for the men and families of HMS Ramilles.
It was also great to see how down to earth their members were, more like a disruptive club meeting with troublemakers at the back causing much chaos!
Excellent day and glad we could help.
Photos to follow.

I think it is great to hear of today's modellers honouring the wartime service of those who served in the RN.

All credit to the Display Team for recognising this.

Part of the display of the PMBDT, was a battle between men o war of the French and the Royal Navy, complete with manouvres to jostle for position, and much noise of cannons firing and accompanying smoke.Throughout this a commentary was given We all celebrated the win with a traditional tot of rum. A super display indeed.

following the Galleons' battle, the team then put on a rendition of a 2nd WW U boat attack on a convoy.A cargo vessel was hurrying along when a u.boat was spotted and disappeared.Next there was a huge explosion, and spurt of water and the cargo vessel broke clean in two.A fleet of Corvettes appeared and with the accompanying sounds of Asdic and sonar "pings" the submarine was located, and  the corvettes began a depth charge attack. This was really well done with the depth charges being laid and going off with a loud bang, shooting a huge spurt of water up into the air.Eventually the U boat was assumed to be destroyed,as all asdic contact disappeared. A very creditable re enactment that we all thoroughly enjoyed.

Finally at the Portsmouth Model Boat Display Teams very special show for our elderly veterans of the HMS Ramillies Association,a couple of the big boys were launched,in the shape of HMS Renown, and HMS King George V.I was handed the radio of the Renown and told to have a play! Now those of you who know me,will realise that I am not famous for putting a boat on the water, and IF I do,it is a Lifeboat! To be trusted with a superb model over 9 feet long, was a little un nerving to say the least, however, after a few manoeuvrings far away from anything I could hit,I gained enough confidence to bring her closer and do a few close passes so that all could see her in full flow.Magnificent,I didn't really want to hand her back!
All too quickly, after 3 hours the display was over. Our lads, average age 88,cannot thank the Portsmouth lads, enough, for going to all the time, trouble and expense that they did,for us.Upon return home I have had a couple of calls from our gang saying they will always remember that afternoon.

And now for a really rare sight,me with a radio in my hand with a working ship on the water!

do you always get dressed in a suit to sail your models, Mick............I feel decidedly underdressed now, especially when I make an appearance at Fleetwood, lol.............is the galleon motorised or was she sailed purely on canvas........looks to be going at a fair lick..........lovely models and glad you back home safe.

we went to the Lakes today for a run out and I missed the junction that I normally come off at,.............. coming off at one a little further north........saw on the news tonight that a woman was killed and a man badly injured at the same junction that we eventually exited at, just 15 minutes after we had gone through it, in a bad collision..............makes you really think of the lives we run. take care on your travels matey.
